In "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," a frightened young woman, Helen Stoner, hires Sherlock Holmes because she fears her violent stepfather, Dr. Roylott, is trying to kill her, just as she suspects he killed her sister Julia two years earlier. Helen is now sleeping in her late sister's room (due to suspicious "repairs") and hears the same mysterious low whistle that preceded Julia's death shortly before her wedding; Julia's dying words were about a "speckled band." Holmes investigates and discovers Roylott has a strong financial motive (preventing loss of inheritance upon his stepdaughters' marriages) and clues involving a ventilator between rooms, a dummy bell-pull, a bed clamped to the floor, and a saucer of milk. Deducing the "speckled band" is a deadly snake sent by Roylott, Holmes and Watson lie in wait, confront the creature when it appears, and drive it back through the ventilator, causing it to turn on and kill its master, thus saving Helen.
