Our nervous systems are constantly interacting with the world around us. The air, the water, the food we eat, the spaces we move through each day. When you have a more finely tuned central nervous system, you may feel those influences much more quickly and more intensely.
This episode is part of Podcasthon, a global initiative where podcasters spotlight nonprofits making a positive difference. This year, I have chosen to highlight Green America, an organization that harnesses economic power to create a more socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
In this conversation, I speak to why environmental health is not separate from mental health. It is one of the foundations of nervous system care. I share how sensitive individuals are the early indicators when something in our environment is out of balance, and how organizations like Green America are working behind the scenes to create healthier conditions for us all. I also talk about Climate Victory Gardens, a simple yet powerful idea where growing food using regenerative practices helps soil capture carbon from the atmosphere.
If you have ever felt overwhelmed by the noise, the light, the chemicals, or the chaotic spaces of modern life, if you have wondered why your body reacts so strongly to environments that others seem fine in, if you care deeply about the health of the planet and the people on it, this conversation is for you.
What Arose in This Conversation
Environmental Health Is Nervous System Health: Mental health is not just thoughts and feelings. It is also how our nervous systems are shaped by the environments we live in. Air quality, chemicals in products, noise, lighting, and the emotional atmosphere of a space all register in the body. For the highly sensitive person, these inputs arrive faster and more intensely.Sensitivity as an Early Warning System: The high sensitivity trait is not about being too emotional or too dramatic. It is about having a nervous system that takes in more information from the environment and processes it more deeply. This early warning system tells us when something in our surroundings is off.The Inputs That Affect Us Most: Noise, light, chemicals, temperature, and even the emotional atmosphere of a space can register in the body very fast. Air pollution, mold, cleaning products, pesticides, fluorescent lighting, and constant background noise all activate the stress response. Nature, natural light, and quiet help the system settle. We Take in the Positive Faster Too: Research shows that highly sensitive individuals also take in the positive effects of healthy environments more quickly. Cleaner air, quieter spaces, contact with nature, and being around others who think in holistic ways all support our vitality more profoundly than they do for those without the trait.Green America's Mission: Green America harnesses the power of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. Their vision is a world where all people have enough, communities are healthy and safe, and the abundance of the earth is preserved for future generations.Climate Victory Gardens: When people grow food using regenerative practices like organic gardening and healthy soil care, that soil can actually help capture carbon from the atmosphere. Green America has already helped register more than 41,000 of these gardens, from backyards to community plots. Even small actions, like growing herbs in a window box, contribute to healthier environmental systems.Corporate Accountability: Green America raises awareness about which banks support fossil fuels, which corporations are harming the environment, and what alternatives exist. They are holding the bar for change and helping everyday people understand where their money goes and how their choices can support or challenge corporate practices.Environmental Care Is Not Separate from Healing: The women I support often come to me with anxiety or depression, but we cannot just look at mental health in isolation. We must include the wholeness of who they are and how the environment is influencing them. Organizations like Green America are cleaning up supply chains, supporting regenerative agriculture, and advocating for less toxic products. They are not only helping the planet. They are helping real human nervous systems, especially the most sensitive ones.An Invitation to Carry With You
Over the next few days, I invite you to pay attention to how your body responds in different environments. Notice what happens in your nervous system when you are in a busy, noisy space with harsh lighting. Then notice what happens when you are near sunlight, plants, fresh air, or simply more quiet. You don't need to analyze it. Just be curious. Just notice.
If you feel called to learn more about Green America or the Climate Victory Gardens, visit greenamerica.org. Whether you donate, change a buying habit, or plant something in your own bit of soil, that is beautiful. There are no expectations. This is about raising awareness so you can keep coming back to what is influencing your nervous system and your vitality.
