Generational abuse is when abuse cycles passes or crosses generational family lines. From Grandparents, parents, children etc. Children might enter into relationships with abusive partners because their relationships mimic what was seen. The transmission of trauma, known as secondary traumatisation , is where the effects of trauma trickles down from generation to generation. Often times victims are desensitised. inter-generational abuse is a term associated with children carrying traumatic wounds into their own adult relationships. It can also be societal trauma like the abuse that has been inflicted on ethnic & racial groups. (The holocaust)
The 4 steps of healing for survivors of these abuse/trauma are: Explore-Find the root cause of your pain. Engage: Talk with other survivors and share your story, with counsellors, therapists, or life coaches. Equip: Educate yourself with the tools to become healthier. Empower: Choose to become not just a survivor but a sur-thriver. By facing your fears, being more connected with yourself and family members compassionately, being more open to trusting others and not scared of change. Although these trauma survivors are more prone to repeating behaviours, they've seen in childhood or adolescence, like surviving abusive relationship or being abusive themselves. You can break the generational curse; though history started with grand parents, parents, or your other relatives. Have safe, stable and nurturing relationships. You have the power to break free from this curse.
