Welcome back to "Rising Warriors Rachael Kulei" Indigenous Podcast. Today's Podcast Interview is "The Arrow's Journey" with Indigenous Executive Producer/Director and Entrepreneur, Jacob Crane. Join us as we talk about his journey as an Indigenous Entrepreneur and how important it is right now for Indigenous People to Rise Up and go back to our ways of trade, creating our own Indigenous Owned Companies.

Jacob is a citizen of the Tsuut'ina Nation, located in the province of Alberta, Canada. He is currently the Executive Director for the SLC Air Protectors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving Indigenous people in the State of Utah, and is the Board Treasurer for the Urban Indian Center of Salt Lake. As a Social Entrepreneur, Jacob enjoys building startup companies that positively impact Native communities. Like many, he wishes to see more conscious tribal investment for future generations, that also creates platforms to build stronger robust Indigenous economies. 

In 2019, Jacob was a recipient of the Running Strong for American Indian Youth Billy Mills Dreamstarter Entrepreneur grant for his work with his media production company, The Arrow's Journey, which uplifts the stories of successful Indigenous youth. He was also a part of the Renewing Indigenous Economies Cohort with the Hoover Institute at Stanford University this past summer.

Welcome back to Rising Warriors Rachael Kulei Podcast! Today's topic is "Not Invisiible" with Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Artist, Tristen Jenni.

As an Indigenous artist my journey with creating feather portraits for MMIWG and their families started with my original piece: "Not Invisible." Seeing the emotional responses to some of my previous works, and desiring a vast impact on something I feel deeply about, I felt that using art might be more widely related to and get others engaged and asking questions. I created this piece to raise awareness for our missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. 

After the loss of my cousin Michelle Sanderson in 2009, I couldn't believe more was not being done to find those who had Murdered her.  This weighed heavy on my heart for some years and although I can't change the outcome of her misfortune, I want to bring more awareness to issues like this in hopes that we get more people working together to keep our women and girls safe and have justice served appropriately for any who fall victim to violence and abuse. Our system is broken and people need to be made aware of the issues we as indigenous people face. Even tho they may not experience this type of systematic racism,  becoming knowledgeable on these issues will help us change old rules and stereotypes that are extremely harmful.

My first request for a personalized feather came from a man Glen Aldrich requesting to use my design as a tattoo, I was flattered and then as we spoke he shared his experience of losing his daughter Ashlea to domestic violence and the lack of justice that he and his family had endured. He went on to ask if I might be able to recreate the feather with an image of his daughter and I was honoured to be tasked with his request. I do not believe that these pieces are to be profited from as they represent something so sacred that was taken from this world too soon and unjustly. No one is ever prepared to lose a loved one and when it happens in such an undignified and cruel way it can sit with us even heavier. 

After my first personalized feather, news got out that I was offering the feathers for our MMIWG to all indigenous families regardless of their geo-location and that all I ask is shipping to be covered, I was quickly overwhelmed with requests and also very humbled at the fact that so many families were entrusting me to create these images for their lost loved ones. 

All of my proceeds from my design " Not Invisible" go towards the supplies for creating the personalized feathers for our MMIWG2S and their families. I get a request, I create a feather and take a digital copy for my records and ship the original to the immediate family of the victim.

Stephanie is a descendant of the Oceti Sakowin (father), and of the Nordic, Irish, and Haudenosaunee Confederacy (mother).

She has been an Indigenous and environmental activist since 2007 and participated in the student and elder occupation of D-Q University from 2008 – 2009, the Return of the Ancestors Gathering in 2009, the Standing Rock Movement from 2016 – 2017, the Native Nations Rise March in 2017, the Fort Laramie Treaty Ride in 2018.

Stephanie is educated in the traditional technique of hand poke tattoo and created her first tattoo design, the Standing Rock Tattoo which became a symbol for the water protectors of the Standing Rock Movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

She is now a full-time traditional hand poke tattoo artist. She is also an Azteka and contemporary free-form dancer, a musician, singer, and song-writer.

In 2019, she released her memoir, Thunderbird Rising, a story of her path to reconnection, empowerment, and resilience.

Today's Podcast we will be talking on "Blessing Sacred Indigenous Land" with Dr. Sherrie Davis. Join us as we talk about the importance of honoring the Ancestors of the land you live on, honoring the land that you live on and how we should be blessing the land that has been desecrated. It is so important that we honor and bless the land we live on and give that honor to those Ancestors of the land you/we are living on. Even as Indigenous people it is so important that we give blessings, honor and respect back to the land that we too travel to and stay on that may not be of our own tribes. This is something I feel is important to be talked about and that more need educated on this.  We will be diving deep into the work Sherrie and I both do for Blessing the Land.

Dr Sherrie Davis owns and operates NW Hypnosis & Integrated Medicine in Vancouver WA. Dr Davis brings a myriad of accreditation to her Vancouver WA practice, She specializes in a wide array of medical issues, chronic health conditions and behavioral health issues. 

Dr Davis studied clinical hypnotherapy & NLP through the American Pacific University the Association for Integrated Psychology and is a registered clinical hypnotherapist. In addition she obtained a masters in Spiritual Ministry and a Doctorate of Metaphysics at the University Life Church (ULC) and Nutritional Therapy at PCC and a degree in Naturopathy Kinesiology, (CBT) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at the KEW Academy.  In addition she has a masters in the methodology of Reiki Healing, and post graduate training and certification in the use of specialized behavioral health counseling and other clinical specialty.

Dr Davis is also a Recording Artists of Native American Flute Music and a 2 time Global Music award winner, her song she wrote and composed "Wisdom of the Ancestors", won the 2019 Bronze Award and in 2020 her Album, "The Journey Home" won the Outstanding Achievement Award. 

Dr Davis also won 2 categories in the 2020 Native American Style Flute Awards, The Shining Star and the Soaring Eagle Award for the NASFA music awards for her album, "The Journey Home".

Sherrie also specializes in paranormal investigations with private homes, business offices and blessing sacred land. 

As time in history has caused a change in our traditions and places where we live as Indigenous people, there have been unmarked graves and sacred land that have been unearthed or developed upon, in many cases causing spiritual activity in newer homes and office spaces. This is where Sherrie uses her knowledge of indigenous traditions, intuitive gifts to connect with the ones who have crossed over before us and bless the land..

Today we will be talking on "Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women" with Operations Manager of Sovereign Bodies Institute, Michaela Madrid. She will be talking to us about the work that she does for the communities for our Missing and Murdered Native American Women. This is a topic that needs to be talked about and needs more awareness brought to attention on what is happening in Indigenous Country in the United States and in Canada.

Michaela Madrid serves as the Operations Manager for Sovereign Bodies Institute. She is a member of the Lower Brule Lakota Sioux Tribe and was born and raised in South Dakota. She has a bachelor's in Political Science and Sociology from Black Hills State University. She has a Master’s in Public Policy, specializing in intergovernmental relations with Tribal Governments from Portland State University. Prior to working at SBI, Michaela has worked for the Institute for Tribal Government, Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, and U.S. Department of Interior - Indian Affairs, Office of Self Governance. Michaela has helped coordinate several community MMIWG2 awareness events in conjunction with other members of the Portland Native Community and also assisted with the Oregon State Police Taskforce on Missing and Murdered Native American Women as a graduate student. She is a passionate advocate interested in combining traditional cultural values and governance strategies to shape policy that will improve the everyday lives of Indigenous people.

Generational Two-Spirit who comes from an urban raised background where acceptance and safe spaces weren’t available within indigenous communities due to ongoing assimilation, racism, oppression, and discrimination influences from western cultures and religions. Through resiliency and advocacy efforts, Renea continues to work diligently to bring awareness in indigenous communities and organizations regarding the need for programming, resources, and safe spaces for Two Spirit youth and people.

Welcome back to Rising Warriors Rachael Kulei. Today I have the honor to be speaking with Sean Rayland, Founder of Red Rebel Armour. Join us as we talk about his journey as an Indigenous man in the world we live in today and intergenerational trauma. This brother is using his voice through his Streetwear designs to help inspire other Indigenous men to step up and take action in their own personal healing and to stay on the "Red Road".

Hi, my name is Sean Rayland, and I'm the founder of Red Rebel Armour. I created RRA to inspire Indigenous men to take action and overcome cycles of abuse, addiction, and inter-generational trauma. So they can reclaim their role in the community as leaders and role models.

I grew up in the inner-city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I witnessed and endured cycles of abuse, addiction, social injustice, crime, intergenerational trauma, and poverty. To me, this was normal, and I didn't know or realize that I was lving in a cycle of oppression and self-destruction.

It wasn't until I reconnected with my culture, learned who I was and my identity along with the history of my people that I finally became aware of the cycles I was living in. It's ironic because the destructive path I once embraced, led me to and reinforced the constructive journey I'm on today.

With that being said, RRA is a culmination of tragedy to triumph, resilience, and culture upon which we articulate through our voice, brand, and designs. All to inspire our brothers to be a higher version of themselves and reclaim their rightful place in society.

It is not easy for us Natives to talk about generational trauma and the truth about "Kill the Indian, Save the White Man".

Native Outlawz

I call it Native Outlawz, because in the past, the government outlawed our Culture and Traditions. Kill the Indian, save the man. So today as we come together to share our Pride and Heritage, they will always see us as Native Outlawz.

I started Native Outlawz in September of 2012, as a place for Natives to come and share their Pride through Native art. I started reading the signatures, and then finding them on Facebook. And that was really a win-win situation. I got to post some amazing artwork. And the artist was being seen by people that appreciated their talents. And then I found Beadwork, clothing, and other Native owned businesses. And that’s where Natives Supporting Natives evolved. Fast forward 5 years to “Standing Rock.” By then I had 210,000 Likes and Followers. And I had Friended a lot of Natives Throughout Turtle Island.  I was seeing a lot of “Live Streaming” of the Protesters being attacked by the local law enforcement. And none of this was being covered by any national news outlets. So I started sharing everything that I could find. It was a call out for Natives to come together and Rise up. I was reaching 10 million people a week. I felt like I had a purpose. I built a platform that could reach a lot of people. But so did a hacker. I was bombarded with offers to sell my Page. I didn’t want to give up what I worked so hard to build. But I did respond to an offer to sell ad-space. And because of that, an app was installed that made them administers to take it over. I was locked out. And I fought hard with Facebook to get it back. But that proved to be a useless fight. I knew of 3 other Native Pages that got hacked and stolen too. August 19th 2017, is when I lost my Page. I was angry and ready to give up. A month later, another Page owner and Friend of mine offered his Page to me. His name is Mark Gonzalez. And his Page was the Native Americans Circle. It already had a platform of 39,000 Followers. So that was my motivation to come back stronger. And fight back harder. And this time, I’m putting myself out there with “Live Feeds.” Because I want everyone to know who administrates Native Outlawz. It’s for Natives by Natives. People need to know who runs the Pages that they Support. There are a lot of fake Pages profiting from the work of Native artists. And they’re usually sponsored. Paying Facebook to promote their Posts to reach more people. You’d think that the Facebook fact checkers would read the Page Transparency and see that they’re administrated from Vietnam. Just another struggle for Native Americans. And another cause and fight for others. It’s Facebook. They limit how many people see my Posts, and try to make me pay to reach more people. I should be able to 169,000 people. That’s how many followers I have today. My memes go viral. But sadly, most of my shares to help Natives don’t get seen. So that’s why I ask people to come check me out everyday. I post new stuff all day. Everyday. Because it’s all about Natives Supporting Natives!!
