With extreme tenderness, the Lord says in Hosea 11:1, "When Israel was a child, then I loved him." Looking into the faces of children causes us to contemplate what great things can be done with life. Too often, at the end of life, we are only thinking of what could have been. What promise there was when Israel was a child, loved of God!

Isaiah 10:5-24

The Assyrian Empire rose as a tool of divine judgement, wielded by God to discipline nations, including Israel, for their disobedience. However, Assyria's own pride and cruelty led to its downfall, demonstrating that no empire is beyond God's judgement. The empire's collapse, marked by the fall of Nineveh, reveals the fleeting nature of human power and the enduring sovereignty of God over the course of history.

Isaiah 9:1-7

Isaiah's prophecy of the coming Messiah offers hope in the midst of judgment, pointing to Jesus Christ, the child born to bring light into darkness. Through His names- Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace- Jesus is revealed as the miraculous Savior, wise guide, divine Warrior, eternal King, and the source of perfect peace. His birth fulfills Godds promise to stablish a kingdom of justice and righteousness, offering salvation and everlasting hope to His people.

Isaiah 9:8-10:4

Isaiah's Oracle against the Northern Kingdom of Israel highlights the consequences of pride, rebellion, and unrepentant sin. Despite God's repeated chastisements, Israel refused correction, leading to comprehensive judgment upon its leaders, people, and society. Their wickedness spread like fire, consuming them with internal strife and destruction. Through the refrain, "For all this His anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still," God's persistent judgment serves as a warning to Judah and a reminder that no one can escape divine accountability.

God says in verse one, "Israel is an empty vine." The word picture is that of a flowing vine with every appearance of life and fruitfulness. After divine examination, the fruit God intended for that vine is not found on it. Nothing is as empty as the life that is given entirely for self-fulfillment. We are created by God for His purpose and His glory. Hosea chapter ten brings us to what should have and could have been in the lives of God's people.

Isaiah 8:1-22

Isaiah urges Judah to trust in Immanuel, God with Us, rather than seeking security in human alliances. Ahaz refuses, turning to Assyria for help, bringing suffering instead of peace. God uses the birth of Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz as a sign that his word will be fulffulled. The people are called to fear the Lord rather than their circumstances, to separate from the world's ways, and to wait upon Him. Those who reject God will stumble in darkness, but those who trust in Immanuel will find their refuge in His unchanging word.

Isaiah 6:1-10

Isaiah’s vision of the Lord high and lifted up reveals God’s unmatched holiness, providing a clear view of Himself, His people, and His purposes. The clearer Isaiah saw the Lord, the clearer he saw himself as he truly was—unworthy and in need of cleansing. This clarity also revealed the work God had for him, leading to his surrender and willingness to serve: “Here am I. Send me!” A vision of God’s holiness brings conviction, aligns lives with His will, and equips His people for His work with a renewed understanding of their dependence on Him.

We are listening to the heart of God as we listen to the heart of this prophet, Hosea. In the calamity that came upon God's people Israel, we must not miss the broken heart of God. We know that our God is a God of compassion. The same Saviour we see in tears, weeping over Jerusalem in the New Testament, is the same God that we read of in the ninth chapter of Hosea.

Isaiah 7:1-16

The young King Ahaz of Judah faced a time of fear an uncertainty, yet God, in His mercy, sent the prophet to guide him. Through the prophecy of Immanuel, "God with Us," God assured Ahaz of His presence and power, calling him to trust in His promises instead of relying on human alliances. Though Ahaz failed to believe, the prophecy ultimately pointed to the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise to dwell with His people.

Those who truly know God's name experience a deep, personal relationship with Him, trusting His character and finding refuge in His presence. Psalms 9 reveals the contrast betweent those who seek God and those who reject Him, showing the blessings of worshiping Him wholeheartedly and relying on His protection during times of trouble. God's justice is sure, and His judgement demonstrates His sovereignty and faithfulness to the oppressed. To know God's name is to humbly acknowledge His greatness, trust in His refuge, and walk in reverent praise of His holiness.
