  • COLORED BY CURIOSITY: Disrupting age old problems in healthcare

In this podcast, Karen and Antra sit down with Zach Smith, a nurse entrepreneur based out of Oregon. They run the gamut in this conversation, covering the early struggles that Zach encountered in his early career. This includes the fractured methods used to pathwork together a preceptorship, feeling like you’re not fitting in, the animosity you can be faced with when you dare to ask a physician a question, to ultimately finding his nursing niche in mental health.

The conversation then dives into the pitfalls that exist in the current nursing school world. Nurses are woefully prepared for the real world, and the discussion touches on the high attrition rates seen in new nurses within the 2 years of them graduating school. They discuss the fact that nurses use so little of what they learn in school and the fact that institutions don’t connect nurses to enough of the real world of healthcare for them to be successful.

Furthermore, the ambitious entrepreneur takes us through his work on a nurse-focused scheduling app that eventually was sold to a large enterprise, to his huge ambitions of changing the way that hospitals are accredited with a patient and staff focused approach.

            ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Jean Ross is a nurse who has spent 20 years working in healthcare. From patient financial

services to human resources to critical care, Jean took her healthcare experience to start a local

care coordination company for older adults in 2016. From that experience, Jean learned two

important things: The next level of patient advocacy will be around health information and

nurses are significantly underrepresented in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Being a person who puts her money where her mouth is, Jean teamed up with her neighbor to

found a technology product, Primary Record, to disrupt the notebooks and binders she saw

families using in the ICU and at home. Her biggest ask of any nurse is to please stay in

healthcare doing something with that experience and knowledge you own. It is valuable. You are

valuable. And, if you are thinking of leaving nursing to become a real estate agent, call Jean.

This PodClass introduces nurses to Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) for the treatment of an abundance of diverse acute and chronic conditions. Guest instructor, Carolyn McMakin, will leave listeners wondering: “WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS??”

In 1996 Dr. Carolyn McMakin began treating individuals with a variety of complex pain issues with Frequency Specific Microcurents resurrected from a list created in the 1920s. Her first published paper in 1998 was a case report of 150 patients with myofacial trigger points, a condition once thought “incurable,’ that achieved 100% relief with FSM treatment. She has since published numerous papers on FSM treatment for various pain and inflammatory conditions, which are also discussed in this podcast course.

Participants will review basic principles of the scientific method and evidenced-based research; and how Dr. McMakin’s curiosity guided her clinical and research experience to discover treatments for a variety of conditions.

                  6. CAREER SOLUTIONS: A Nurse Creates a Business and Career to Fill the Gaps in Healthcare

                    COURSE OVERVIEW

To introduce Nancy Ruffner as a “social worker” is akin to introduce Wolfgang Puck as a “chef.” Never accepting the limitations of the situation or system that was in to deliver the quality of care that she was capable of providing her patients or clients, she became adept at following the breadcrumbs of her common-sense to become the solution. This course will remind the learner of: their own essential common-sense, and how to listen to it; the importance of using your voice, and the nuance of knowing when it’s ok to save it for the right time; and how to critically-think about, and follow, the breadcrumbs of “begets” (i.e. an elderly patient develops a neurological problem, and that ‘begets’ another service, and a power-of-attorney, and that ‘begets’...)

                    OBJECTIVES

                    1. Learn how to effect change in your own work environment
                    2. Learn how advocacy can come in different forms (e.g., speaking, coaching, educating)
                    3. Learn how to coach effectively through relying on your past experiences to prevent the squelching of one’s voice. “I needed a me, so I became one.”

                              ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Nancy Ruffner is a Board Certified Patient Advocate and owner of NAVIGATE NC.

Nancy earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW) from Western Carolina University and a Graduate Certificate in Counselor Education (GCCE) from NC State University. The growing field of Professional Patient Advocacy is young, and Nancy was among the first in the nation to earn the BCPA (Board Certified Patient Advocate) credential.

Nancy founded NAVIGATE NC, an advocacy company whose services help families to meet the challenges that normally come with aging or with chronic conditions. Since 2013 the company has emerged as a fast-growing agency with a goal of becoming a market leader for patient advocacy services in the Southeast.

Nancy Ruffner speaks regionally to groups on topics involving aging, living with chronic conditions, planning, and navigating within a complex healthcare system. She has designed and taught gerontology coursework at the community college level that served to usher talented people into the senior care industry. She is currently an Adjunct Instructor at both Duke and NC State University's OLLI programs (Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes), teaching a course that she designed called “A Consumer’s Guide To Healthcare Advocacy”. Nancy enjoys provoking thought and helping folks to create and implement a plan. Her antennae are always up with respect to advocacy for clients, ways to educate and create awareness, and the chance to provide real solutions.

                            5. FORMIDABLE: Navigating with a Moral Compass for Exceptional Patient Care and Workplace Culture

                              COURSE DESCRIPTION

According to The Healthy Workforce Institute, “71% of physicians and nurses have linked incivility to medical error; 27% of physicians and nurses said disrespect led to a patient’s death. 81% of nurses who leave an organization cite peer and nurse/manager relations as a cause for leaving.” The purpose of this PodClass is to introduce participants with a simple, actionable, nursing principle to improve the quality and safety of patient care; and the health of workplace culture.

Any nurse who works in an arena where the words: “CODE BLUE” are as common as a missed lunch-break, will tell you that going ‘back to the basics’ of the ABCs - Airway, Breathing, Circulation - is an antidote fear, doubt, and indecision. Amber Moore brings the same kind of simplicity and clarity to her practice as a clinical nurse, nurse manager and educator, by leading with a ‘moral compass’. She illustrates how making integrity the highest value of her nursing practice has made her a courageous and uncompromising advocate for her patients.

This course demonstrates how the application of current, evidence-based research into the interpretation of conventional diagnostic tools (i.e. routine blood tests) revolutionizes their usefulness for diagnosing, treating, managing, and preventing the root causes of chronic illness. In this RNegade podclass, Brendon Vermiere reveals the physical and mental health challenges that made him a medical science autodidact with a passion for applying cutting-edge research to the interpretation of standard diagnostic tests. His work is akin a ‘Rosetta Stone,’ transcending the language, biases and treatment approaches of competing medical paradigms - Allopathic, Integrative, Holistic, and Functional - to advance the diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of chronic illness.

                              OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

                              1. Generalize differences between the diagnostic and treatment approaches of Allopathic and Functional Medicine Paradigms.
                              2. Recognize diagnostic values that fall into ‘high’ or ‘low’ of the “normal limits” of conventional blood tests as a potential indication of advancing disease.
                              3. Compare the treatment response between Allopathic (Conventional) and Functional Medicine to abnormal results of standard blood tests (CBC, BMP/CMP, Lipid Panel, CK-BMP, Thyroid Panel, Vit D, Inflammatory Markers, Etc.)

After being exposed to the power of functional lab testing in the start of his career, he began intensely pursuing that as a career path which has led him to be widely regarded as one of the top leading experts in Metabolic Health and Functional Education.

He is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners, and the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health’ through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction. He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.™, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health.

When he’s not educating doctors/practitioners/professionals, helping clients overcome their most severe health struggles, or producing cutting edge scientific education, Brendan enjoys all things fitness and is probably working out. He also enjoys anything in nature and any activities that expand his heart, mind, and soul.
