Realizing the creature can talk, Rou tries to engage it in a dialogue to avoid a fight. He makes his introductions of the group but the creature is not impressed that Eight is Rou’s friend, still mad that Eight hurt them. Rou continues to try and placate the creature and eventually learns that it has a name: Mongo. Mongo claims to have been ordered to guard the children, and gets clearly mad when Trix makes an attempt to get closer to the cages.
As a truce has been brokered, Mongo allows Rou and Trix closer to the unconscious Eight. They help get Eight’s chest plate open so Cela can help heal them. Surprisingly, healing magic seems to work and little green leaves sprout from Eight’s darkwood core. Trix and Rou also notice something in Eight’s chest glow slightly from within the core. Eight reawakens and they’re able to share a reconciliation moment with Rou before Eight scolds Mongo for their role in keeping the children here. The group is told that Mongo only listens to “the boss” so they need to take up their concerns with The Dragon. When Trix tries to pass off that they outrank The Dragon, the lights go out and Erdir’s voice echoes in the chamber.

Trix leads Rou through the halls toward where they believe the dungeon, and subsequently Zero and the children, might be. The pair successfully avoid guards and find themselves halted by a pair of locked doors. Trix is able to pick the lock on one but the other proves to be more of a challenge. Deciding they have a 50/50 chance, they head down the hallway and hope for the best.
Meanwhile, Zero realizes that there are levers on the wall and tasks Cela with activating them while they deal with the sleeping beast. Sneaking up on the creature, they summon a sword into their hand and attempt to pierce the pebbly, stony flesh. While they’re able to injure it, the last thing Zero sees is a massive fist hurtling toward their face when the creature cries out in pain. Trix and Rou arrive to find the beast standing over Eight and Cela.

With Rou hiding in the wardrobe ready to enact their plan, Trix calls for a guard to get some food. However, with the alarm blaring the guard admits food will have to wait as they don’t know what the alarm is for yet. When the guard tries to go to the bathroom for water, Trix stops him and says that they’d much rather take a nap as they’re not feeling well and he can leave. Rou attempts an attack but is foiled when his foot gets caught on the rug. Trying to salvage the situation, Rou covers the guard’s mouth and claims to be part of an elite squad and that the other guard outside the door can’t be trusted.
The guard believes him and suggests Rou look in the bathroom for a healing potion because they need to get Trix moving. Unfortunately the guard makes noise as he is shuffling through the room and in an attempt to get him quiet, Rou’s rambling accidentally reveals Trix’s true plans to eliminate the cult and the Emperor. The guard attempts to assassinate Trix but fails when Rou calls for the other guard’s assistance. The pair are able to convince the second guard that the first guard is a traitor and he’s carted off…but not before leaving a gas bomb in Trix’s room.
Meanwhile, Zero is still trapped between the wall and the giant chicken butt. A guard has made his way into the space and is refusing to cooperate. During the back and forth, Zero notices the guard glancing at the rune and then the symbol on their chest plating. Zero manages to amplify the rune, causing something to activate within the walls. The stone door slides open and reveals a dark pathway heading downward.
Zero carries Cela down the path, the door closing behind them. When the path comes to an end, they find a very large room. Along the walls are various cells, blocked off by doors of iron bars. Little faces press against the bars to stare at the newcomers. Zero is elated to have finally found the children, but then notices the giant-sized creature sleeping in the center of the room.

Trix reviews the information received from Ikar and decides to take a chance. They get the dagger out of hiding and try talking to it. Surprisingly, Rou and Trix find they can communicate just like they do with the Seven Swords. They try to work through Ikar’s riddle together, but it isn’t until Trix offers blood that they hear Ikar’s voice again. Offering up their own life force, Rou is extracted from the dagger just as Trix passes out.
Rou wakes Trix with a splash of very cold water and then the pair take a moment to reunite. They share details of their experiences since Rou’s death, including Eight’s transition into Zero. The pair then begin to plan how to escape their current predicament and reunite with their automaton friend.
Meanwhile, Zero confronts a pair of guards in the tunnel who are blocking the door ahead of them. They summon a giant chicken to plug the hallway, effectively keeping the guards at bay while they work to get the magical door open and escape. As they do so, one of the guards squeezes past the chicken and attempts to stop them.

Zero makes their way down the dark strange hallway, grabbing a pebble and turning it into a little light as they do so. As they follow the hallway they find that there is strange tubing connected to the ceiling. Following the tubing they arrive at a room with strange machinery and wiring, and at the center is a reclining metal chair with a familiar person strapped to it. Cela, the spellweaver they met in Isha, has been questioned and tortured for information about Eight. They decide it is worth the risk of getting caught to free her.
Meanwhile, Trix sleeps in their room and dreams of reliving the ritual. This time around, a mysterious voice and a disembodied mouth speak to them from the shadows. The voice and mouth are revealed to belong to Ikar, the goddess of truth. She offers Trix a choice, sharing that they have a mutual problem and she wants to assist them. They can learn how to help their friend or they can learn how to receive an advantage in the journey ahead. Trix makes their choice, and awakens with the knowledge they dreamed of.

Zero makes their way through the fortress, dodging guards for the most part. Unfortunately, one guard sees through their ruse. Though they are captured temporarily, they are able to make a smooth getaway by distracting the guard and disarming him. They run off and continue their search, eventually finding a strange room. The floor is etched with runes and constellations, a large brazier in the center of the room. At the edge of the room is a locked door.
Meanwhile, Trix is escorted to their grandfather’s bedchamber, where the Emperor awaits near a desk that’s situated at the center of the room. He beckons Trix closer and they notice that he’s looking at a large tome that is openly on display. Across the pages are names and dates, all the handwriting appears very different. The Emperor tells Trix that the tome is their lineage, and asks Trix to sign. When Trix agrees, the Emperor hands them a dagger, an ink bottle and a quill. An agreement of blood and ink. Signature made, Trix is allowed to return to their chambers and get some rest.
Floating in limbo, Rou has been able to watch everything, and struggles to call out to Trix during the ritual. Realizing he can’t talk to Trix, he takes a closer look at his surroundings and notices he’s trapped in a hazy force field, almost a barrier. He notices that something has caused wear and tear, and the barrier is weak in spots. Rou uses this weakness to his advantage and begins to inch closer toward the dagger made from his tooth.

Eight updates Trix briefly on the situation before Raspy calls for the guard escorting Trix to apprehend “the construct”. When the guard makes his attempt, Eight blasts energy from their palm toward the ceiling which causes chunks of debris to fall onto the guard. Though the guard is able to avoid most of the debris, Eight tries to shove him into the portal. When that fails, Raspy takes matters into his own hands and disposes of the guard.
Raspy then makes Eight an offer. They can walk away with the traitor, and points to Trix, or they can have their friend, and raises the dagger. When Eight chooses Trix, Raspy aims the dagger in an attempt to throw it toward the portal. Trix realizes what is going on and takes quick aim with their bow, hitting Raspy in the shoulder and stopping him. The pair team up to destroy Raspy and then are able to enjoy a few moments of respite before putting a new plan into action.

Trix wakes in the arms of Faerlin, who gives them a healing potion for now and a regeneration potion for later. They escort them back to Trix’s room through a secret door. Over the next four days, Trix is escorted by armed guards whenever they leave their room. They are fed, rested, given medical attention and treated more or less like the royalty they are.
Meanwhile, Eight has spent the last four days chasing “Raspy” through the areas of the fortress that Trix has been kept out of. Finally fed up, Eight hears “Raspy’s” voice close by and tries to cast a portal to trap him, but it fails. A giant bug-like creature crawls from the portal - and unknown to Eight another portal opens up in Trix’s room. When a guard is pulled into the portal, Trix makes a run for it and finds Eight in the middle of a confrontation with a tattooed, bald man.

Eight is left alone in a room with four robed cultists, Rou’s corpse on a platform in the center. As the cultists approach, Eight warns them to stay away or they’ll be destroyed. At first they seem to listen, but when they begin to draw on their magic Eight is forced to drop to the floor to dodge it. They retaliate, immediately dropping two of them. The remaining cultists try to escape but find their boss has locked them in the room with the construct, and today Eight takes no prisoners.
As Eight fights the cultists, Trix is carried up to the top of the fortress by a dragon. When they arrive at the nest, the dragon turns Trix to face her and asks why Trix was climbing out of the window in the middle of the night. They try to hide their true motivation, but the dragon can tell Trix is lying and crushes them in her claws just enough to cause them to lose consciousness.
Rou comes back to the mortal realm, his spirit caught in limbo and unable to return to his body. He watches as someone, bald and covered in tattoos, removes one of his fangs and is forced to follow along when they leave the room. While the party is distracted, Erdir takes the opportunity to question someone from Eight’s past.

Trix dangles from the window ledge, nearly falling to their death, when they realize a patch of sky seems to be missing. The shadow moves and is revealed to be the dragon Faerlin warned the group about. She snatches Trix and carries them up to the roof of the stronghold. As she climbs, Trix tries to escape her grasp but there is a thin mucous substance that prevents them from getting good traction.
Meanwhile, Raspy leads Eight from their cell, through the fortress and down to a “purification chamber” where four cultists stand on opposite walls. On a platform, in the center, lies the body of Rou. Eight is forced to come to terms with the reality of The Dragon’s words, and their anger is stirred. Before leaving Eight alone, Raspy removes Eight’s manacles, claiming the cultists did this to Rou. Once the door shuts, the cultists draw in closer.
Lunahse has come to defend Rou from Death’s deal: give up your werewolf form and you can return to your friends. Rou at first is comforted, but quickly feels very small when the gods begin to argue over his soul. Lunahse offers Death a deal on Rou’s behalf, which Death seems keen to take. Rou agrees to the deal, and discovers that he is now Death’s servant in Rejiev.
