Robots From Tomorrow!

This part of our monthly Previews two-parters is a little different, for two reasons. One: Mike is still flying solo. Two: the first premire publisher up for discussion this time around is Marvel. Instead of ending on the usual downbeat that is the general apathy our distiguished hosts feel towards The House of Ideas, this month we get that out of the way first. From there? Well, Mignola and Stenbeck kick off "Koshchei the Deathless," "Snagglepuss" enters stage right, and "Frankenstein Alive, Alive" is alive! Plus: questionable "Artists' Editions," delux reprints, all-ages comics and way more!

Emboldened by his solo run of Pull List episodes, Mike takes a crack at tackling this month's Previews catalog all by his lonesome. So what sorts of funny books await us in November's green section? How about a new "Strangers in Paradise" series? Will this 25th anniversary title finally get Mike to read this series? Enough with the questions, let's get declarative! There's a spiffy looking collection of Wally Wood and Jack Kirby's "Skymasters" on the horizon, as is a volume of classic Archie horror comics. Speaking of Archie, looks like their new series "Cosmo" might just fill the Sonic-shaped hole in their line up (and Mike's heart.) Then, of course, there's plenty of Fantagraphics love, particularly for that Shak Kane book they're coming to market with! All that and so much more await you in this week's episode!

After months of threatening and a few near-misses, we finally take a look at the manga/anime juggernaut that is Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira. But not just one version; all three!

The B&W manga, the color Epic run from the late 1980’s, AND the anime. 4200+ pages of comics (over the two versions) plus over 2 hours of anime have lead up to this discussion. We guarantee that you’ll come away from this episode having learned something about this work that you never knew.
