Robots From Tomorrow!

Another month, another "Previews" catalog to dissect! As always, Mike & Greg start things off with the diverse Green section, also known as the largest section of the book. What's coming to comic shops in November that catches the lads' fancies? Charles Burns! Battle Angel Alita! Paul Kirchner! Double shots of Forsman with a Fiffe chaser! Scott Morse! Fence! Bond! Tank Girl! All that, plus what the hell is up with Boundless (seriously, we're asking here…), ranking the hierarchy of sins from sex to drugs to violence, which epic-lengthed Adam Hughes series is finally collected, Art Clokey's masterpiece (that's Gumby, dammit!), the Tao of Tanks, a property crossover so obvious we're stunned to be stunned by it, and more. Definitely something for everyone in the top half of this two-part "Previews" walkthrough!

Sam Teer drops by this week to help Greg make heads or tails of Steve Gerber & Jack Kirby's "Destroyer Duck". Published by Eclipse Comics in the early 1980's, "Destroyer Duck" was a 5-issue satirical onslaught hatched to fund Gerber's legal dispute with Marvel Comics over the rights to Howard the Duck. Duke Duck takes up arms against Godcorp when the monolithic megacorporation kills his only-seen-in-shadow-but-obviously-Howard friend The Little Guy. But do these comics exact satisfying satirical revenge in a mighty marvelous manner? Or does too much creator bitterness make this work a lame duck in both creators' careers? And did Greg really just side with Marvel Comics??? All that and more as opinions and observations run amok in this week's episode!

In advance of Jack Kirby's 100th birthday next week, the lads talk about the King and try to take some stock of the body of work he left behind. Have the decades of Kirby clones and imitators made it harder for new fans to recognize the genius in Jack's work? What makes a successful interpretation of a Kirby property?
