Another extremely famous and talented songwriter, JBJ has been writing hits for over 35 years and while some are possibly considered a bit corny or lovey dovey, you still find yourself singing along to them. Whether that makes it a good song or not I don't know, but 130+ million albums sold does tell you something - he (and the band) have a lot of fans.

Episode 008 Lady Gaga

Ok, I don’t know where to start with this weeks first songwriter, she has achieved so much in her career which incorporates songwriting, acting and performance art, and even fashion. Has won so many awards including Golden Globe for acting and Academy Award for songwriting, and thanks to her latest acting role I can’t stop thinking about her - her name is Stefani Germanotta or if you prefer Lady Gaga.

There are plenty of songs to choose from and plenty of hits - she has sold in excess of 150 million singles and around 30 million albums, which is about to increase with her next album coming soon in 2019 I believe. I’ve gone with a track which is a bit more raw and from hearing her talk about it, a very personal and real subject - Joanne.

Episode 007 Roger Waters

This week begins with an exceptional songwriter and performer Roger Waters of Pink Floyd fame. Famous for being the brains behind The Wall film and concept album, there is a lot of his personal history playing out in the songs, and he’s also very sharp politically which makes for very interesting songwriting. Not your average boy meets girl love songs or she ran off with him stuff, there is a lot more depth to Roger Waters’ songs. The Amused To Death album is a fine example of political and emotive writing. He can certainly get your blood boiling and have you rallying against injustice.

And not just lyrically is he brilliant but musically he creates worlds. The scope and grandeur are sometimes just stunning and you wonder how he could have imagined it - which is then inspiring and intimidating - for a fellow songwriter at least.

So we have an interesting rock relation journey this week that takes us through some very well known names.

Episode 006 Jack White

This week is John Anthony White, aka Jack White of the White Stripes fame who went on to have three number 1 solo albums and win 12 Grammy awards. He wrote a bond theme song which is not something everyone gets to do - called Another Way To Die - also the only bond theme featuring a duet which he performed with Alicia Keys.

There’s also a movie called It Might Get Loud (but didn’t really) which features three guitarist innovators - Jack White, The Edge and Jimmy Page. I must admit I watched it because Jimmy Page was in it, but it was actually quite interesting learning how these guys created their sounds that became world famous and unique.

Episode 005 Robbie Robertson

Robbie Robertson was the leader of The Band. The Band had many great songs including The Weight and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

There’s a great movie called the last waltz which was directed by Martin Scorsese and is a record of the the band and their last performance, and you can hear those songs and many of their friends' incuding Neil Diamond who also features in this episode. The Band broke up while they were on top and at Robbie’s insistence.

The first song - Chest Fever - was played as the band's opening number at the famous Woodstock festival in 1969  - they played on the last day between ten years after and blood sweat and tears...

Episode 004 George Harrison

The quiet one, the Traveling Wilbury, the one whose guitar gently weeps while he's singing - yes this Songwriter Series episode starts off with the legendary George Harrison. We also hear from some of the other Wilburys and cross over a couple of musical genres to get the ninth song (eighth songwriter).

Episode 003 Steve Vai

This episode begins with the incredible guitar wizard and composer Steve Vai. This episode goes in a mysterious direction thanks to Mr. Vai's songwriting partner for song 2, Desmond Child. It really could have gone anywhere from there...and it did!

We take a walk down a very Aussie lane listening to some awesome bands and songwriters. Whether you can guess the ninth song or last artist remains to be seen, but I'm betting you won't. Have a go!

Episode 002 Zucchero

This episode begins with the legendary Italian songwriter Zucchero as part of the Songwriter Series which establishes a relationship between each song by the songwriters.

Zucchero has many incredible albums and is a world class performer. In the words of Molly Meldrum "do yourself a favour", listen to Zucchero... This first song of Episode 002 is Baila, a very catchy pop tune that will have you tapping your foot!

In this podcast series I am connecting nine songs together in an episode using only the songwriters as the thread that runs through the theme (not always playing the most famous song - it's a learning experience too hopefully). For instance this first episode starts with Gary Moore, then the second song is written by Gary Moore and Phil Lynott, the third written by Phil Lynott and John Sykes etc. until the last song could be written by anyone from any genre because a lot of songwriters mix in many circles, not just the genre they're popular for. Sometimes the songwriter doesn't even play on the song you're listening to, but I have tried to ensure they are.

I'm not telling you where each episode ends because that would spoil the fun - why don't you try to guess where it will go in nine songs!
