If you heard last week's retirement news episode, you might have heard that Dave Ramsey prohibits his followers from investing in ETFs. But yet they're perfectly welcome to buy mutual funds. In today's episode I'm breaking down the similarities and differences between the two vehicles to reveal why Dave's advice is asinine.
Also, some people will tell you it's better to rent than to own in retirement. While this is a personal decision everyone has to make, I share some numbers that might challenge conventional wisdom.
And I talk about a dumb article Trulia produced five years ago, which contends that if you're not worried about leaving your home to your kids when you kick the bucket, it's better to rent.
Here's a link to the article: https://www.trulia.com/research/rentvsbuy_retirees_spring16/
If you see a dumb article or if you hear some bad retirement advice, email me at [email protected] so I can share it on the show.

Today I'm going through some of the highlights of the 2021 version of the Guide to Retirement, from JP Morgan Asset Management. According to the nice folks at JP Morgan,"Updated annually, the Guide to Retirement provides an effective framework for supporting advisor retirement planning conversations with clients. It includes charts and graphs to help explain complex topics in a clear and concise manner."
According to Katherine Roy, Chief Retirement Strategist, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, “Our 2021 Guide to Retirement considers a number of timely themes impacting those planning for retirement, such as managing lower expected returns for those closer to retirement, the importance of diversified investing, and tax management strategies.”
It's a 50+ slide PowerPoint deck and if you're not a complete retirement nerd, it's a big pile of eye-crossing charts and graphs. But there is some good information. And today I go through some of the highlights and how some of the data might affect you and your retirement plan. So join me, won't you?

Today's episode is a deep-dive into the solo 401(k), which is a 'secret weapon' for solopreneurs. Did you know you can buy cryptocurrencies, gold, real estate, or even a race horse with a solo 401(k)???
Log onto E*Trade and try to buy investment real estate within your IRA. You can't do it. And that's why you need a solo 401(k). Not to mention, the SUPER-HIGH contribution limits.
Jordan Sheppherd has helped hundreds of people set up solo 401(k) plans. He's an expert in this stuff and he's a really cool dude.
Self-direction is an amazing opportunity that I believe all self-employed people should take advantage of. But don't take my word for it; check out this episode and find out for yourself.
Learn more about Jordan's services at www.checkbookira.com.
Disclosure: I hired Jordan to set up my solo 401(k) a few years back, and it was the single most important decision I've made in my retirement planning process.
