RC010 One Trusted Adult - Student/teacher Interactions that Respect Boundaries and Healthy Relationships with Brooklyn Raney
Brooklyn Raney is the Founder and Director of the Girls Leadership Camp as well as the Founder of Generation Change, a nonprofit organization that seeks to embolden youth to become empathetic and compassionate change-makers through cross-generational mentorship. She has spent the last decade working in independent schools as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Additionally, she is the author of One Trusted Adult: How to Build Strong Connections and Healthy Boundaries with Young People, a collection of real stories, ideas, and practical strategies to empower all adults with the skills for building trust, establishing boundaries, and creating a positive culture for today's youth. During her free time, Brooklyn enjoys hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
Brooklyn joins us today to discuss the inspiration behind her book and how building the 'one trusted adult' relationship with students can help them address their needs in a safe and healthy way. She explains the difference between setting loose boundaries versus very rigid ones and how independent schools can create a culture of trusted adults. We also discuss why school staff must be open to giving and receiving feedback and how administrators can help their colleagues and faculty address fears around sharing negative feedback with other educators.
