Jason Hoffer, CEO of B2 Outlet Stores & pastor at Pathway Church in Zeeland joined Perry & Shawna Mornings to talk about the life of Joseph in the Bible. Joseph has a roller coaster story. He received favor from his dad, that’s good! But his brothers hated him, that’s bad. But they didn’t kill him, that’s good. But they sold him into slavery, that’s bad. But he found favor with his master, that’s good. But his master’s wife framed him for a crime he didn’t commit and he ended up in prison, that’s bad. Up, down. Up down. If we were only to look at any one part of Joseph’s life, depending on the moment we pick, it could appear that Joseph’s story is a bad one. But God. God was with Joseph and orchestrating the details of his life so that Joseph’s personal mission would be accomplished.

With all that Joseph went through you might expect to see him making poor choices based on what he was feeling at the time. But instead we see that Joseph consistently honored God with his choices. Jason shares with us that emotions are data, not directives and openly shares the temptation in his own life to let his emotions direct rather than inform him.

Joseph had many people in his life throughout his journey. They all had an agenda for Joseph, like Potipher’s wife. She wanted Joseph to meet her personal needs. But Joseph didn’t allow others in his life to write his story. He trusted God, even in the most difficult moments to be the author of his life.

As we look back on Joseph’s life we can see the hand of God promoting and preparing Joseph for God’s amazing plan for his life. But in our own lives we aren’t privy to that perspective. Perhaps if we could look at our own past and see the thread that is true to who we are as it weaves through every season, we too could see what we were created for.
