  • After - One Direction FanFic turned Film Franchise

Happy Monday! This week, Katie and Michae are kicking off a brand new series here on Popcorn Chats...The Cringe Series. Both of them have a love for cringey films, and there was no better way to kick off this series than starting with Harry Styles fanfic written by Anna Todd turned book series turned film franchise, After. They called in their friend, Olivia, a former and current 1D stan, to share her thoughts on seeing this story play out over the years. The three talk about their standout cringey scenes and characters, but also redeemable moments throughout the film. Katie shares her frustration with the character trope that Tessa falls into, Liv talks about her disappointment in Selma Blair, and Michae points out the plot hole in Hardin’s plan to get Tessa back at the end of the film. They also talk about fandom culture, their thoughts about a franchise capitalizing on a real person, and the future of this franchise, as the second film, After We Collided, was due to be released this year. Stay tuned for more episodes in our Cringe Series, but check back in next Monday for when Katie and Michae discuss Netflix’s new show, Hollywood!

*Side note from editing Michae: I don’t think I explained myself the best when discussing fandoms, especially on Twitter, so I just wanted to point out that I do not believe that fandoms as a whole are toxic. I understand they can be very loving and accepting communities for people over a mutual love for something, however there are certain people within them can be toxic. I’m a huge 5SOS stan, (ask Olivia especially), so no disrespect towards the fandom(s) as a whole!*

  • Ranking the Game of Thrones Characters - The Night King is Kinda Sexy

Welcome back to Popcorn Chats! This week, Katie and Michae are back with another ranking episode; this time with characters from one of their favorite shows, Game of Thrones. From God level characters, to bottom of the barrel trash, they rank the folks of Westeros and defend their positions on those rankings. While in agreement with quite a few, there are some key characters that divide them, including one of the main characters that they saved to debate at the end of the episode (spoiler alert: it’s the bastard). Katie shares why she has such a soft spot for Lord Varys, which if you listened to the Hunger Games episode, you might have an idea as to why that is. They also talk about why the women in this show reign supreme over all others with their unmatched power, the Achilles heel of all men on the show, and Michae’s love for Grey Worm. And what do Petyr Baelish and Mr. Bates from Freaky Friday have in common? Well, Katie is gonna tell you. Also, is it just Katie and Michae, or is the Night King kinda sexy? Thanks for listening this week! Tune in next week to hear Katie and Michae discuss “Call Me By Your Name”, featuring the love of Katie’s life (sorry Jack), Timothee Chalamet.

  • Divergent - Justice For Veronica

It's our last episode of YA month on Popcorn Chats. We hope you all enjoyed listening to our episodes about these franchises as much as we enjoyed recording them. In this week's conversation, Katie and Michae discuss one of the least successful book to film franchise adaptations in the YA category, Divergent. Michae addresses her love for the book series and the injustice that took place in the making of these films and the straying away from the great Veronica Roth's vision. Katie, once again, attacks Hollywood for their tendency to focus on money rather than the heart of stories and the devoted young audiences. Both Katie and Michae spend some time gushing over Theo James, who plays Four in the films. They also break down what they think contributed to the failure of these films at the box office and the decision to forgo production of the fourth and final film in the series. YA month may be over, but there are still plenty of exciting things to look forward to on Popcorn Chats! Tune in next week to hear Katie and Michae rank the Game of Thrones characters. Stay well, stay home, and stay safe.

  • The Hunger Games - War Is Not Good, Guys

Happy Hunger Games everyone! In the third week of YA month, Katie and Michae are discussing The Hunger Games franchise. Michae shares about her childhood turned adulthood love of the franchise, the role character death plays in Katniss’ life, and Katie talks about her favorite Effie Trinket moments. They also share their thoughts on Team Gale vs Team Peeta, how our world parallels Panem at times, and their thoughts on Katniss as the first YA female heroine. Also, remember Tigress from Mockingjay Part 2? Well that is who Katie aspires to morph into in the future, so if you know a great plastic surgeon who specializes in turning people into tigers, hit her up! See you all next week for the final episode of YA month where Katie and Michae will be talking about the Divergent franchise, and Michae has some beef with how these movies were handled. Have a great week, stay inside, and stay safe!

  • Twilight - The CGI Baby is Wack

Happy week two of YA month here at Popcorn Chats! This week, Katie and Michae talk about the franchise that took the teenage girl world by storm, Twilight. They talk about their earliest memories of the franchise, including Katie’s most memorable movie going experience of Breaking Dawn Part 2. They also praise the best thing to come out of the franchise: the soundtracks. There is however a high level of cringe in these films, which Katie and Michae do not shy away from discussing so “Twi-hards” beware! They share where they land on the Team Edward vs Team Jacob debate, discuss what made this vampire/werewolf franchise so popular and successful, and why splitting the last book into two movies is “blasphemous” according to Katie.

And once again, Michae manages to slip in an Adam Driver reference, and you won’t want to miss Katie’s rant about styrofoam cups. Also, check out Katie’s short film, “Werewolf Fangirl”, that was inspired by fandom culture. Tune in next week for Michae’s all time favorite YA franchise, The Hunger Games!

  • Harry Potter - Hogwarts Was Never Safe

Happy YA month here at Popcorn Chats! Katie and Michae decided that for the month of April, they would be revisiting four of the biggest YA franchises of all time. And to start, they had to kick it off with the ultimate YA franchise: Harry Potter. Katie shares her childhood love of the series, while Michae shares her thoughts on watching it for the first time. They discuss how Harry Potter set the trend for other YA film adaptations, how the franchise has stood the test of time thanks to broad appeal, as well as the highlights and drawbacks of the entire 8 films. Michae fangirls over Snape, Katie shares what she would’ve done if she was Voldemort, and both mutually agree that Dumbledore is actually one of the shadiest characters in the series. They also look at how the actors have faired moving on from such iconic roles and if they were able to successfully break out of the “franchise curse”. Tune in next week to hear them break down Twilight!
