Local roofing companies have been led to believe that reviews are the most crucial local SEO ranking factor. Sometimes it goes even further where some think it's the only local ranking factor. However, you will learn that you need more than reviews to allow your roofing business to rank in Google's Local Map 3-Pack results.
Suppose you've done your work to garner customer reviews and still aren't ranking within the 3-Pack. In that case, your business needs other digital branded signaling required to rank. For example, is your business website attached to your Google Business Profile? And is the website strong enough (in terms of quality content and branding) that it enhances your Google Business Profile?
Roofers usually think they can focus only on reviews and stick up a basic website with no content. This strategy rarely works. Sometimes you can still rank because of proximity and authority (if you've been in business for 5+ years). However, you leave yourself vulnerable to competitors who address every aspect of Local SEO.
Trust is only one component of the EEAT ranking signal, and reviews are a large percentage of establishing that trust. However, your business must also demonstrate experience, expertise, and authoritativeness. You can achieve this by enhancing your website, especially with DataPins.
Listen to this podcast episode to learn the nuance of ranking on Google's Local Map 3-Pack and why it requires more than reviews. Nolen and Jason of Roofing Webmasters cite examples from clients and decades of experience in the roofing SEO industry.

Roofing SEO has changed. Roofers with a strong digital brand survive, and those without one fail. Of course, creating and maintaining that brand requires consistent digital marketing efforts. Roofers that stop marketing during the down season won't be branded for peak season.
As more factors come into SEO, Google distinguishes good from lousy primarily by branded signals such as EEAT, experience, expertise, authority, and trustworthiness. You must send these signals with a branded website, reputation management, and quality content.

The Grover Theory requires you to distinguish which of three things is not like the other. For roofing companies, this applies to your online web presence in 2023. Search Google for your target keyword and analyze the top 3 websites and map listings compared to yours. Which of these things is not like the other?
In most cases, it's your website. Getting a high-quality web presence does require professional services like those offered at Roofing Webmasters. We don't say this to sell a service, but to be honest. The only way roofing companies can compete with top-performing competitors is to hire a professional roofing company.
With recent updates, Google has grown more sophisticated, including the Helpful Content Update. As a result, old-school SEO tactics like blogging are no longer adequate for roofers. You don't have time to keep up with all the changes, which is why entrusting your marketing to a pro is crucial.
In this roofing SEO podcast episode, Nolen and Jason discuss the roofer keyword Grover theory and how to apply it to your online web presence.

At Roofing Webmasters, we've been working with roofers for 12 years. As a result, we notice problems with roofing company websites around the web. Generic agencies have a tendency to implement horrible SEO strategies for roofing clients.
One recent example came from a local roofing website that purported to offer "PPC roofing services." They intended to publish "PVC roofing" but misunderstood their client or auto-corrected PVC to PPC. Either way, it's gross incompetence by the marketer.
This website also engaged in antiquated SEO tactics like keyword stuffing and multi-location marketing, attempting to rank for cities spanning 50 miles apart in radius. Everything this agency did for their client was incorrect, incompetent, and embarrassing.
In the following podcast episode, Nolen Walker and Jason Landry explain why Roofing Webmasters is different than "Generic "Catch-All" agencies" and why you can benefit from the specific expertise offered by a niche-specific roofer marketing agency.

When your roofing Google Maps ranking drops out of nowhere, it could be due to various factors. But, most roofers must first realize the connection between their main website, its content, and their Google Business Profile.
Contrary to popular belief, Google Maps rankings depend on three primary factors, distance, relevance, and prominence. Reviews and location only influence two of those factors. The other factor, relevance, depends on your website content.
Most roofing companies fall into two camps. Some believe they only need reviews and a Google Business Profile to rank in the Google Maps 3-Pack. Others think they need tons of mass-produced content and hundreds of website pages to rank. The problem is both are wrong.
Google's Helpful Content Update cracked down on unhelpful content produced specifically to rank on search engines. This can include blogging, AI-generated content, duplicate content, and other spammy, low-quality content.
If your Google Maps ranking drops suddenly, you are too immersed in one of these camps. This podcast episode details what roofers should do to achieve and maintain Google Maps rankings in 2023.

About half of all roofing companies have a "name" problem regarding Google ranking. You might be surprised by how Google's algorithm views your company name. In this podcast episode, we will answer the following questions:
Remember to consult with a lawyer for specific questions regarding names and trademarks.
You might wonder what the problems are with roofing company names and Google. Suppose Google thinks your name is the same as another established roofing brand. In that case, the established brand will acquire much of your traffic.
Another factor to consider is topical authority. For example, does your company name include the word "roofing," or does it have something like "construction" instead? If the latter is true, you might lose out on topical authority, suppressing your keyword rankings on Google search and Google Maps.
Nolen Walker and Jason Landry of Roofing Webmasters answer these questions and more on The Roofing SEO Podcast.

Roofing is an excellent business to be in in a bad economy (and a good one). However, some roofing companies only benefit from a good economy. Sow, what happens to roofers during a recession? (which is probably coming soon and has already started).
Here's what happens: roofers that invest in marketing during a recession continue to thrive in business and earn even more than during an excellent economy.
Don't get us wrong; you should cut costs during a recession but NOT ESSENTIAL COSTS. The problem is some roofing companies think marketing is optional.
Our marketing fee costs roughly the week's pay of a full-time employee. The choice should be simple, but some roofers have a mental block. Unfortunately, this can cost you your business during a recession.
Of course, there's another side to the coin that roofers will cite as their reasoning. So many lousy marketing companies screw roofers out of money. So in these cases, the money is going down the drain.
Still, to thrive during a recession, you NEED ROOFING MARKETING. The key is to use a good roofing marketing company. Some competitors will fold during this time, allowing you to pick up their customers.

Most of us remember the 80s promos about how the brain changes on drugs. The same concept is true for roofing leads. Roofers who want leads are addicted to a low-quality business lifecycle. They are so used to this brain mode that they don't realize much better options exist.
We recently got a call from a roofer who expanded to 3 northeastern locations. They weren't expanding because of growth; they were expanding in an attempt to grow. This is an example of roofer lead brain.
Instead of adequately translating your brand digitally to Google (The Big Show), you remain stuck in lead-to-lead survival mode, which never pays off long-term. When roofers think they have to "buy leads," they lose out on the lead generation process. So now you are getting store-bought leads (low-quality) instead of homegrown leads (high-quality).
To get out of this cycle, the mindset must shift to brand. When your brain is focused on the brand, you start getting consistent leads without living in survival mode. In addition, a strong brand correlates strongly with ranking on The Big Show, which is the best way to grow your roofing business in 2023.

Some roofing companies mistakenly believe that the Google Business Profile with the most reviews automatically ranks the highest. That's not the case. Instead, Google's local algorithm looks at proximity, relevance, and prominence. Although reviews impact prominence, they're only a fraction of the total algorithm.
However, one thing reviews do impact is conversions. As a result, Google Business Profiles with lots of reviews will convert customers at a higher rate. Check out Nolen's 5 points of roofer review success.

Nolen and Jason of Roofing Webmasters discuss Google's Helpful Content Update and how it impacts roofing websites. There are several misconceptions about SEO content, especially regarding what actually works for improving your business.
Google's Helpful Content Update is pretty straightforward. The search engine is attempting to eliminate low-value content that bloats the index and doesn't serve the user's actual needs. Unfortunately, a ton of roofing "content" fits this description.
We discuss the issues at length in this podcast episode, including data-driven solutions that ensure users benefit from your SEO website content. We also provide examples of lousy roofing content that this algorithm update targets.
