Join us as we close out our series on The Beginning of Infinity. We wrap up the last two chapters and provide a series summary. Ultimately, we find ourselves with a choice between static and dynamic societies. The books makes a strong case for the latter. We're also joined by Joe Matz - our film critique - to cover his review of "The Rental."
Join us as we continue our journey through "The Beginning of Infinity." This week, we're covering chapters 15 and 16. We discuss at what causes culture and creativity to evolve, the role of each in understanding humanity, and the requirements for a society most hospitable to human nature, a dynamic society that embraces - rather than suppresses - creativity. These chapters further discuss the important idea that humans are different than both computers and other animals. We are universal constructors.
Join us as we discuss chapters 13 and 14 from The Beginning of Infinity. We start off with a recap of Joe's travels in Greece along with commentary on island life. We then transition into a discussion on how groups of people can coherently make decisions in a political system (Chapter 13) and whether or not beauty has objective standards (Chapter 14).
Join us with special guest host Jack Urness, co-host of "The World's Best Podcast with Jack and Reno." We discuss Chapters 10, 11, and 12 of The Beginning of Infinity. In these chapters, the author discusses the role of epistemology (knowledge about knowledge) in open societies, his defense of the multiverse as an explanation for observable quantum mechanical effects, and the role of bad philosophy (philosophy that actively prevents the growth of knowledge) in hindering philosophical and scientific progress. We continue to make the case that this book presents a big tent, under which we can all meet. "The way to converge with each other is to converge upon the truth."
Join us as we discuss Chapter 8 of The Beginning of Infinity discussing Optimism. We give the definition of optimism from Deutsch's work and discuss the implications this has for a scientific civilization.
