  • Greek Austerity: Tragedy to recovery?
In August, Donald Tusk, the president of the European council, tweeted: ‘You did it! Congratulations Greece,’ and austerity was declared over. But after being nearly bankrupted, bullied and almost buried, for Greeks to be told their financial crisis is over might be something of a surprise. Roundtable examines who, if anyone, benefitted from the world's biggest-ever financial rescue and what was perhaps one of the biggest rip-offs of all-time.
Joining us at the Roundtable is Dmitris Tsarouhas, an Associate Professor at the Department for International Relations at Bilkent University; Vicky Pryce, from the Centre for Economics and Business Research; and Isidoros Diakides, a Labour Councillor and Co-Chair of the Greece Solidarity Campaign.

  • Greece Austerity: Was it Worth it?
Europe's answer to the financial crisis was austerity - cuts, cuts, and more cuts. And in Greece's case borrowing of $330 billion from the EU, the European Central Bank and the IMF. The Greek economy shrunk by at least a quarter over the last eight years and most of the money borrowed, went to banks, which may have caused all the trouble in the first place.

They represent the very best and worst of our past. Historical figures, cast in bronze, stone and sometimes gold. But when a statue commemorates a time and vision that is no longer acceptable, should it be torn down? Or is it important they stay as a reminder to be discussed and debated?
Joining us at the Roundtable is Bruce Baker, Lecturer in Modern American History at Newcastle University; Richard Drayton, Rhodes Professor of Imperial History at King's College London; Karen Lang, Associate Professor in the History of Art at the University of Warwick, and Sophia Cannon, a Political Commentator and Barrister.

  • Contentious Statues: Set In Stone?
Statues of historical figures are often subjective. One country's view of events can differ wildly from another. In a democratic society, shouldn't we be leaving monuments to history where they stand so we can face up to our past?
