Everyone watches the Olympics and it is easy to appreciate the level of skill of any athlete competing there but it is hard to understand the journey each athlete has taken to get there by just watching their final performance.

Get to Know the Athlete:

A growth spurt in grades nine and ten sent this hockey-loving kid from outside Peterborough, Ontario to a physiotherapist to strengthen his core. Trevor Jones, who is now 203 cm or 6'8", initially used rowing to build core stability and strengthen his spine. With help from veteran coach Carol Love, Trevor eventually came onto the sport and won the U23 men's single in 2017 and 2018. Now, after overcoming some injuries and training under the legendary Dick Tonks, he is ready to test his mettle in Tokyo 2020.

With a history of volleyball and a love of slamming iron, Gabrielle Smith brings ample anaerobic power to her partnership. Her BSc in Cell Biology informs her training, nutrition and recovery. To fund her athletic journey, she has worked as a lab tech, lifeguard, warehouse stocker, cleaning lady and more.

Jessica Sevick can go forever, using her aerobic capacity to drive the double in the middle of the race. When she was a child, she suffered a major brain trauma when she fell off her luge in a camp at the Canadian Olympic Park in Calgary. She has recovered – mostly. Jessica has an engineering degree from the U of A and is pursuing a master's degree in neuroscience at UBC.

William Peter Simpson Crothers is the veteran of this boat, having won Silver in London 2012 and competed in Rio 2016. A spiritual experience in the woods near Whistler, BC convinced this man that his rowing journey was not over yet, and pushed him to Tokyo 2020.

Gavin Stone has the lungs and the muscle. Hailing from Island Lake Rowing Club in Orangeville, ON, this gentleman is pursuing chemical engineering and wastewater management.

Luke Gadson was inspired to pursue his Olympic Journey by 2012 Olympian, Doug Csima at the Leander Club in Hamilton, Ontario. He is an aspiring Journeyman Electrician.

Jakub Buczek started his career as a lightweight but has since built out his body to be a competitor in the heavyweight competition. Raided in Boston, and schooled at Columbia University, this athlete took advantage of his dual citizenship to row for Canada.

Josh King got his start at the Ottawa Rowing Club in Ontario. He is another former lightweight that contributes real speed to the heavy men's four and is part of this crew as the spare.

As veteran rowing coach Al Morrow would often say, "All potential means is that you haven't done anything yet." So here's two athletes, Jenny Cassons and Jill Moffatt, the lightweight women's double, fired up and ready to prove themselves at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

What is it like to win a world championship and hug your cancer-free mom? What's the difference between peak racing performance and steady training performance? What does crying tell you during training? How do you manage clinical depression while training for the Olympics?

We find these answers in today's episode with Hillary Janssens and Caileigh Filmer Women's Pair (W2-).

They call themselves the workhorses and these two ladies are incredible athletes who will go deeper into their pasts. Especially Caileigh in her past of being a swimmer and elite swimmer who had a lot of potential within that sport, and ended up transitioning into rowing. She described her perspective as a young person who's now mature and much older who has this perspective as well. It'll be interesting to hear, not only for young athletes but also for parents who are pushing their children down the high-performance pathway.

Hillary Jansens is a fiery, intelligent and dominant competitor. Raised on a dairy farm in Cloverdale, BC, she has proven herself to be one of Canada's top oarswomen. She won silver in Florida in the women's eight in 2017, then transitioned to the pair, where she won gold with Caileigh Filmer in Bulgaria 2018, and bronze in Austria, 2019.

Caileigh Filmer began her athletic career as a competitive swimmer.  She transitioned to rowing in high school, where she was discovered to have natural power and athletic talent.  She has won medals a the World Junior Championships, Youth Olympic Games, World Cup and World Championships – the most notable being Gold in the women's pair with Hillary Janssens in 2018.
