Tim Shorts of Gothridge Manor joins me in a discussion about our experiences as project creators for ZineQuest 3. Before the interview, I knew we would be talking a lot of details and that might prove to be too much for many listeners. The plan is that Tim and I would talk for an hour and the I would have a second, non-technical interview to provide lighter content to dilute it. As we talked, it became obvious that I consistently underestimate how long I can discuss any topic with people like Tim. Well, brothers and sisters…..this is two hour discussion. No apologies. 100% pure deep dive.

The majority of John’s sales comes from selling PDFs on DriveThru and he own website. He doesn’t do Kickstarters. If you have any interest in making a living from our hobby, you will find John’s path not only interesting and his stories entertaining but it is also apparent that path is reasonable and obtainable by others.

The first interview is with freelance writer and game designer, Matt Forbeck. His work history is too long and detailed to list here but is only a google search away. We talk about his journey into full-time freelance work at an early age as well as his work and friendship with many of the “Old Guard” of TSR. We also get to hear how a crazy, impetuous leap made in his youth paid off. His experiences and advice are still applicable for us starting a freelance career today.
The second part is an off-the-cuff discussion with Morgan Grover whom I interviewed in Episode 7. Here Morgan extols his love for Shadow of the Demon Lord and I grind my ax regarding how my normal dislike of High Fantasy is fueled to hate by bad adventure design in Decent into Avernus. Morgan explains how he fixed those shortcoming in the game he runs PLUS he also explains why Shadow of the Demon Lord is the perfect system to run The Cure of Strahd.

Apparently, I have an ax to grind and Ben humors me. I intended for this to be a ten minute banter back in forth but this grew in scope and our dialogue took on a life of its own. This show is unapolgetically, RPG Ramblings and this is what you get.

We get into a fairly deep discussion about shipping, the cost and logistics of shipping and muse about different ways to work through those costs. The first topic I am saving for another day because I believe this topic is fairly pertinent as we launch into Zine Quest 3 madness. We discuss the stress that comes with being creative and how we deal with that. This also applies to game mastering and we ponder why engage in activities that bring us stress.

The show starts with Sean Richer and we discuss Terror of the Stratosfiend: a gonzo horror, sci-fi mashup that bolts seamlessly onto Dungeon Crawl Classics, but can be used in any OSR game. An absolutely beautiful set of zines produced by successful Kickstarters. We discuss how Rifts was the inspiration and devolve into discussing Savage Worlds.
For the Deep Dive, Mark Hunt describes his journey in acquiring the IP for Gangbusters, an old TSR game that was out of print for decades. We start at the beginning and go through steps it took to become owner of the IP and start publishing. This can serve as an inspiration and a starting point for those wanting to pursue an exiting IP.
