Hello Boss, welcome back and a fabulous Happy New Year for you for 2023! I am super excited about today's conversation. We’re kicking the year off with a really tangible and actionable activity that actually works - vision boarding.

I want to share this tool with you because vision boarding has been an integral part of my life and it’s how I've been able to achieve some of the biggest things imaginable. I've had a board on the go for almost nine years now. And last year, I ticked off everything with the exception of one thing from my vision board (and I had some of the biggest things I've ever had on my board to date!).

If you're curious about vision boarding, or even if you already use vision boards on the regular, I'm sure you're going to love today's episode. I step you through an overview of how a vision board works as well as my process for building the ultimate board.

The first step is that you need to get really clear on what it is that you want and what you want your life to look like.

The second step is understanding how having a visual representation of the life and business that you want keeps your desires, goals and focus at the forefront of your mind. A vision board helps you stay on course. If you find yourself getting off course with your goals and you haven’t created a vision board, maybe this is your sign to do so this year. I discuss how this ties in with the concept of co-creation and my interpretation of the law of attraction.

Next, I run you through what I’ve had on my board before, and how I’ve achieved these goals, including a promotion, house, relationships, renovation and how I want to be in this world.

I also take you through how to create a board - both physical and digital, and the reasons why I prefer a digital board these days. I provide some cues that will help you determine what you might want to include on your board for the year.

Having a vision board is deeply powerful for being more intentional about the life that you want to live and the things that you want to have in your life. I really hope that 2023 brings you everything that you desire. Vision boarding is such an incredible way of bringing your big vision to life.

It’s been a big year and I think a lot of us are wondering where the months have gone! I thought it would be great to share a little behind the scenes today with an overview of what’s been happening for me this year both on a business and personal level. 

One of the biggest shifts on the business front has been the introduction of my small group coaching program. I talk about how I had to overcome some mindset blocks around launching and having a group program and why I’m so glad that I committed to that goal. The shifts and transformation I’ve seen in the business owners going through the program has been incredible. 

I’ve also been doubling down on the podcast, knowing this is where I can really serve and share valuable content. And, because there are only a certain number of hours in the day, I dialled back on social media this year but talk about how I’m revamping my social media presence next year. 

A huge portion of my year was taken up by my house renovation and I’m so grateful to have a sustainable business that supported me to focus on this. I talk about my passion for helping other business owners build a business that supports their lifestyle and creates freedom and space for all the important things.

For me, having a sustainable business looks like having a successful life as well, which means I’m taking some much needed time off with my family. I talk about coming back to what’s important, and I also talk deeper about why I’ve decided to live alcohol free.

We all know the importance of having a ‘why’. Your ‘why’ is your purpose and your reason for doing what you do. But what happens if you struggle to stay connected to your ‘why’, or you’re unsure how to uncover it?

Well, Boss in today's episode I share a new way to approach your ‘why’, breaking it down into three parts, with each component being just as important as the other.

First of all, I explain the power of having a ‘why’. Your ‘why' is your purpose and it underpins your goals. It also helps you stay committed to your actions, which enables you to reach your goals. Your ‘why’ is what keeps you moving forward when times are tough and connects you to something bigger than you on the daily. Your ‘why’ is a fantastic compass - without it, it's easy to get lost with no direction. 

I break down the three components that make up your ‘why’.

1. Your emotional ‘why’
2. Your business ‘why’
3. Your material ‘why’

I talk you through the components of each of these, how to identify them and how they contribute to your life and your business.

I explain how these three components may be fixed or may be seasonal. Regardless, unpacking these three components is what is going to supercharge your year because you will be so clear on why you are doing what you're doing for your clients, for yourself, and for others that are important in your life.

Running a business can be hard work and sometimes you need something bigger than yourself and bigger than what you're doing to connect, to drive you forward so that you can maintain an awesome mindset and build momentum, even when you are working through hard seasons in your business.

When you know and connect to all three ‘whys’ you are supported to take aligned action and so much more of your business will click into place.

Hello Boss, today I’m joined by special guest Lisa Alward. Lisa is an interior designer and published author with years of experience working on residential properties throughout Australia. Lisa heads up Bella Vie Interiors, a design studio with headquarters in Brisbane, and is committed to creating beautiful homes for her clients. Lisa has built an incredible A-team of in-house employees and in this episode shares her experience of doing this.

In our conversation, Lisa shares how she knew that she needed to grow her team, and the phased approach she took moving from contractors through to part-time and full-time employees.

Transitioning to having part and full-time employees is a big commitment and Lisa details the ways she prepared and set her business up to accommodate her new team members. She runs through office space, hardware, file management systems, software and most importantly - standard operating procedures. Lisa shares that every part of her business is documented from administration, business development, onboarding, design and offboarding which ensures consistency and continuity.

When it comes to hiring, Lisa shares what she looks for in new team members, highlighting that the most important thing is that they align with her values system - loyal, hardworking, diligent, open and honest, and have a high level of attention to detail. She also shares that flexibility and a great skillset, as well as a willingness to learn, are also incredibly important.

Lisa also details the important tools and culture that she cultivates in her team around communication. She shares her vision, is constantly updating her team and is open and transparent regarding client fees. We also discuss how having a listening culture is so important.

Lisa shares her top three lessons that she has learned as a people leader which are:

1. It takes time and patience to train people properly.
2. Trust is vital - everyone needs to know that they have each other’s backs.
3. Systems are key.

When we feel that things are wrong in our business, we can quickly jump into a reactive state of tinkering. We’ll make changes like changing pricing, altering messaging or shifting our audience focus. Often, we think that making these adjustments will improve our overall results. The problem with tinkering is that when you make lots of little changes, the result is often the opposite of what you want. In today's episode, I explore the negative impacts of tinkering and quick changes and what to do instead.

First up, I take you through the impact that making frequent, small changes has on your business. The first is that you confuse your audience and customers. It’s well established that one of the most effective ways to nurture new clients is to use the dictum ‘know, like and trust’. And when you make too many changes too frequently? You do the opposite of ‘know, like trust’! It’s important to build continuity so that people can get to know you, and then move into trusting you. And once someone gets to know you and trust you, they come to like you.

The second negative impact is that you tend to trip yourself up and confuse yourself. You aren’t able to understand what's working and what's not working, because there's too much change. This can drastically undermine your self-trust. 

I reveal what you can do in your business instead of tinkering. Of course, it’s normal to want to make changes, but the secret is to ensure the change happens in a considered and structured way.  The main takeaways are:

1. Build a strategy. You need to make changes from the ground up, rather than operating from bright shiny, off the back of other people’s advice or in a reactive way. Stop relying on tactics and start with strategy.

2. Have a plan or programme of work This is really important so that you know the ‘what, when and how’ you’re rolling something out.

3. Take your time. There is so much pressure for us to react quickly. But I want you to know that when you change something in your business, it can take time to cement those changes.

Consider the following questions - Am I changing things too quickly? Am I being clear? Am I being consistent?

This episode will give you some food for thought, especially if you have been finding yourself wanting to tinker with your business.

I am currently doing a renovation and I love a good analogy, so for this episode, I thought I’d do something a little bit fun and do an episode of lessons learned in building and renovating that also apply to business! I suspect that hidden inside this episode, you're gonna find plenty of golden nuggets.

The key lessons we explore: 

1. Vision. In building, when we first started planning our home we had a huge seven-bedroom house with an indoor fireplace and all the bells and whistles. We fell in love with that plan. But now in retrospect, it doesn't actually align with our values or vision. Our life vision is more aligned with simple living, minimalism and a sustainable lifestyle. Having a big home just didn’t align with that vision or value system for us.

And the same goes for your business. Unless you know where you're taking your business long-term, it's going to be really easy to be distracted and get carried away with taking action and doing things that don't align with your vision. So it’s key, whether you're building a house or whether you're building a business, to know where you're going and what is important to you.

2. Investing in the right team and support. This is so important when you're renovating unless of course, you're the kind of person who loves to DIY. Spoiler alert, I'm not that person! Investing in really good people helps you bring your vision to life. Not only that, you want the right people, who get your vision and understand what you’re trying to achieve.

The big takeaway here is, do you want to learn how to do that thing? Or is your time better spent in your zone of genius, and outsourcing that thing to the experts? I share the aspects of my business that I outsource, and how doing that has been instrumental to both growth and sustainability of my business.

3. It's a season, and it won't last forever, but definitely worth it. For us building, it hasn’t been easy. It’s required a lot of time, with many decisions and has been very intense. Similarly in your business, you will have intense periods where you're making a lot of decisions and working really hard. But it’s important to remember that these intense periods shouldn't be lasting for sustained periods of time. So whilst it's a season, remember, it won't last forever, but it is absolutely worth it!

One of the most powerful tools we can have in our toolkit as a business owner is to learn how to trust ourselves. You are the expert of yourself and the expert of your business. Yet we still innately look outward for answers. We often think that others know more than us, and that is simply not the case.

This episode will help you learn how to cultivate your own self-trust, your own knowing and remind you of the importance of listening to your intuition.  If you’re constantly looking outward for reassurance or answers, or you’re disregarding your intuition, I know you’re going to love this conversation.

As business owners, we’re constantly led to believe that everyone knows more than us. When you believe this, you stop trusting yourself. Cultivating self-trust so that you can lean inward, and not disregard your intuition, is essential for success.

1. Listen to your gut and intuition. As humans, we’re designed with an innate knowing, and the more you tap into it, the more you realise just how powerful it is. I identify the ways our instinct shows up.
2. Take action on your goals. When you set goals for yourself and you don’t work towards them, you lose trust in your ability to achieve what you say you’re going to achieve.
3. Challenge your inner critic. You need to get really good at recognising that what you’re telling yourself is not fact. Instead, take radical responsibility for your mindset. Social media has a habit of fueling our inner critic. Be mindful of what feeds your inner critic and avoid these things.
4. Know what is important and know your guiding principles. Get really clear on what is important and what isn’t important. Master deciphering between those two things.
5. Honour your seasons. As business owners, we’re often told we need to be consistent and do all the things all the time. Lean inward and listen to your internal knowingness so you know what to say yes and no to in particular seasons.

Cultivating self-trust is at the forefront of my programs. This is part of how I help my clients to get success. No life and business look the same. Leaning deeper into cultivating your own self-trust can be life-changing for both your life and your business. When you trust yourself more you stop looking at everyone as the expert and really truly embody the fact that you are the expert of your life and your business.
