Have you ever wondered what a religion rooted in puritanism, that fully embodies purity culture and modesty, really believes about sex and sexuality? Have you ever struggled to link the "premarital sex is sin" belief to the "married sex is awesome" one? Biblical sexology just might be the key. Coined by the anonymous (yet all too familiar) Larry Solomon, the idea of biblical sexology is rooted in misogynistic gender roles and ideas about the interactions between married men and women. It also creates a loophole for Evangelicals to openly enjoy sex, which leads to some pretty interesting beliefs, statements, and conclusions.

In my second annual non-Christmas Christmas episode, I discuss handling holiday-related triggers and choosing joy. WAP certainly garnered an interesting response. While clearly not for everyone, the lyrics nonetheless conveyed an empowered, experienced version of female sexuality that we don’t often see in mainstream media. Adding to the conversation surrounding this song two years after it was released might feel late, irrelevant, or pointless. However, viewing the song, and what it represents, through the lens of the Christian Right’s response to it feels as topical as ever, especially when you realize that this response is symptomatic of the ways in which this culture views women and sexuality, as well as the creation and consumption of media. In this episode we are examining these views through one pop culture commentator’s response to WAP, a response that I believe is representative of Evangelical Christian culture’s as a whole… and indicative of not only how these people feel about female empowerment and sexuality, but how they feel about the female body and women in general.

Spoiler alert, like so many other things that are “of the world”, this culture sees WAP, and the sexually empowered woman the song represents, and a targeted attack on their religion and beliefs. All I can really say is that if they want a war, they’ve got one.

Culture wars. You’ve heard the term and have likely seen it in practice, whether or not you realized it. In this episode I’m taking a shallow dive into how culture wars manifest in Evangelical Christian culture. After a very brief history lesson, we will look at two examples—one viral, one personal. We will also discuss two very, very bad men, who just so happen to have something in common. Spoiler alert, it’s the religion and the very culture these people are so hellbent on preserving.

So we're taking Josh to task and discussing the ways he upheld and solidified the damaging and dangerous beliefs inherent to Christian dating and courtship, and holding him accountable for the ways this book has reverberated through many of our lives.

This is the third and final (for now) part of our deep dive into the myth of Christian persecution in this country, and today we are looking at the tragic story of a young man who was inexplicably willing and eager to die for his faith. After his death, he was turned into a martyr by many people in Evangelical Christian culture—people ready to hold him up as an example of how selfless, faithful, and dedicated we should all be in the name of sharing the gospel. But was John Chau a selfless saint? Was he a victim of a religion that brainwashes young people to be so “on fire for god” that their own lives here on earth become an afterthought? Or was he obstinate and foolishly naive, hell-bent on following through on what he believed to be a god-given directive? As with everything else we’ve covered, there is no easy answer here. We’ll end the episode—and the series—on a much more lighthearted note with a brief discussion of Logan Dorn, dubbed the Christian Male Karen, whose own god-given directive was apparently... harassing teens for wearing swimsuits at the beach.

Today we are continuing the discussion of the myth of Christian persecution in this country by looking at one of the most infamous martyr stories in recent history. Evangelical Christianity took the opportunity to run with the story of a teenage girl, with her whole life ahead of her, brutally murdered for refusing to deny her faith in God. The story shocked the world, and was weaponized and used at every turn as supposed proof of the growing danger that Christians are in because of their faith. What happened, though, when it turned out to be just that—a story? Did those who were using the story to strike fear in their congregations (and grow their bank accounts) recant and apologize for getting it wrong? Of course they didn’t.
