June Jones is a celebrated football coach and former player with many accomplishments and accolades. Jones enjoyed a 13 year coaching career in the NFL spending time as an assistant with the Houston Oilers, Detroit Lions, and his Atlanta Falcons. In 1994 June was named head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and he took over the worst team in the NFL in 1993. His 1995 team still is the only team in NFL history to have 5 players go over 1000 yards on the same team. His record as a head coach against some of the best coaches in league history was outstanding.
After his NFL coaching career, he went to the University of Hawaii in 1999. Even though the University was talking of dropping football at the time Jones took over the downtrodden Warrior football program, in his first season with the same players, he built it into one of the most exciting and competitive squads in the country. In his first season with the Warriors, he broke the NCAA record for biggest turnaround in the 100 years of college football. 1999 also marked the first of three Conference Coach of the Year awards for Jones. (1999,2006,2007). He was also in 1999, named National Coach of the Year by CNN, The Sporting News, and American Football Coach.
Jones led his Hawaii teams to 76 wins, the most by any Hawaii coach in school history, two Western Athletic Conference Championships and 6 bowls in 9 years. Under Jones, the Warriors broke more than 400 school records and 50 all time NCAA records. He then went to Southern Methodist University and proved again that he is a master architect in building and rebuilding football programs. Jones has also coached high school and CFL.
In 2019, Jones was hired in the XFL as Head Coach and GM of the Houston Roughnecks. There he led his team to a 5-0 record in the shortened Covid-19 season and coached PJ Walker to be the number one QB in the XFL. While not losing a game, his team again was the number one offensive team in the XFL until the league ceased operations.
