  • At Home and In History: Honouring the Métis Matriarchs

    The hosts of Shakamohta discuss the significance of women in the Métis community, both historic and currently. Through interviews with our own moms, we explore lessons on motherhood and the legacy of the important women in our lives. We are also joined by Kate Gillis as she highlights her Master's thesis work focused on the underrepresentation of Métis women in 18th and 19th-century St. François Xavier, Manitoba and how her own understanding of the Métis women of her life led her to this challenging topic.

  • The Artistry of Métis Drag with Just Glue
    The Rupertsland Métis Student Association’s Shakamohta is back with the first episode of Season 2!

    Our student-led podcast celebrates the traditions and innovations of the Métis community.

    This episode is hosted by returning student Drew Desjarlais (she/her) to welcome special guest Just Glue (they/them), to talk about the artistry of Métis drag. Just Glue is Two-Spirit, Franco-queer, a drag performer and a designer, as well as a self-described oddball queen, with a bonkers sense of humor and even more eccentric references.

    Originally from Manitoba but now located in lovely Edmonton, they have been slaying drag since 7 years old for a whole 11 years now! Just Glue also appeared at RLI’s 2SLGBTQIA+ Gathering on April 11-12 during the Charity Drag Show.

  • Volleyball & the North American Indigenous Games with Thomas Froberg and Jackson McGillivray

    Rupertsland Institute’s Shakamohta is back! Shakamohta is a show all about connecting students with Métis community members making waves across a variety of careers, hobbies and fields. 

    In this month’s episode, Métis athlete Thomas Froberg serves as co-host and guest on today’s episode as he and Jory chat about the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) and his subsequent time as a MacEwan University Griffin playing volleyball at the university level. Then Thomas’s teammate, Jackson McGillivray, joins him for a conversation on their athletic journeys and experiences as Métis members of Team Alberta’s volleyball team at NAIG 2023. Hear about the cultural and athletic experiences they had as their team scored gold in Nova Scotia.

    Rupertsland Institute presents Shakamohta, a student-led podcast. Shakamohta [shack-ah-moe-tah] is a Heritage Michif word meaning "connect," and this podcast is all about connection, community, and culture.  

    In today's episode, host Samantha Hamann (she/her) chats with Métis musician and astounding vocalist Ella Coyes (they/them) about their musical endeavours as Sister Ray. 

    Sister Ray’s voice within their music acts as a vessel to connect to their culture and forge a deeper connection with listeners.
