Rupertsland Institute presents Shakamohta, a student-led podcast. Shakamohta [shack-ah-moe-tah] is a Heritage Michif word meaning "connect," and this podcast is all about connection, community, and culture. 

In today's special Métis Week episode, host Jory Proft  interviewed renowned Métis fiddler Alex Kusturok about his experiences growing up engrossed with Métis music, his projects, and fiddling for the Pope.

Today’s episode is all about sports. 

Haven and Ireland Wong are Métis sisters, teachers, and high-level handball players. They sat down with host Jory Proft to discuss handball in Canada, being Indigenous athletes, and what it's like to represent Canada and the Métis community on the international level.

Our Michif Word of the Day comes from a Northern Michif word for ‘game’ or ‘sport’. The word is mîtawêwin [mee-tah-wee-win]. You could say, “hockey is my favourite mîtawêwin”, or “mîtawêwin is something that brings us all together.”

Chef and culinary consultant Jenni Lessard sat down with Jory to discuss her experiences with land-based and traditional recipes, and Ruby spent the morning with Ginger Auger of Ginger’s Bannock House to learn more about how she took her history and heritage to create her famous bannock donuts. 

Our Michif Word of the Day is wihkasin [wee-kah-sin] which translates to “delicious” in English.

Today's episode is all about art. Hosts Samantha Hamann and Jory Proft interview Métis artists Krista Leddy and David Garneau about some of their recent artistic endeavors and how their Métis culture influences their artwork. 

Krista Leddy (she/her) is a Métis artist who creates timeless pieces which hold traditional aspects of Métis design and technique. Her pieces are bright, bold, and her work uplifts the voices of all within the arts community. 

David Garneau (he/him) is a contemporary Métis artist. He is the head of the Visual Arts Department at the University of Regina. David's art speaks to modern tastes and values. A few of his pieces center on his journey finding and maintaining a contemporary Métis identity.

In each episode, Shakamohta presents a Michif word/phrase of the day. Our first phrase is from the Heritage dialect: 

koochiihk neu kaykwayak (koo-cheek ne-oo kay-gway-yak) which directly translates to “try new things”.

The Métis Scholar Awards program is funded through endowment agreements negotiated at 17 post-secondary institutions across Alberta through the Métis Education Foundation and Rupertsland Institute.

RLI and the Métis Education Foundation also now offer two newly established internal Métis Scholar Awards to recognize Métis students at non-partner institutions. The first MEF endowment provides financial assistance and encourages achievement of Métis applicants in academic, artistic and athletic excellence. The second endowment provides financial assistance to Métis citizens entering Early Learning and Child Care studies at provincial post-secondary institutions.
