Jill Ivey has been a storyteller for as long as she can remember.

She taught herself to read at four. She began writing at five. She studied creative writing, built a business around storytelling and made words her professional currency.

Then she got COVID.

The infection eventually passed, but the brain fog didn't. Words that once came automatically began disappearing. Names became harder to retrieve. Writing took longer. Sometimes Jill knew exactly what she wanted to say but couldn't access the word she needed.

Four years later, some of those changes remain. Jill describes the experience not as one catastrophic loss, but as “a thousand paper cuts.” 

In this episode of Rupture: The World of BestGuessistan, Wendy Lurrie talks with Jill about what happens when an invisible illness alters something fundamental about your identity.

They talk about Long COVID, aphasia and brain fog. But they also go deeper: masking disability while running a business, advocating for yourself when you still “look fine,” grieving the person you used to be, and feeling guilty when you can no longer perform according to the expectations you once had for yourself.

Jill and Wendy also examine recovery culture. The expectation that illness should have a timeline, that people should “bounce back,” and that if you aren't getting better, you must somehow be doing recovery wrong.

Then they turn to the systems that are supposed to help. Jill describes being referred to a Long COVID clinic only to encounter what was initially an eight-month waiting list. The conversation expands into healthcare access, insurance, shortages of specialists and what happens when early intervention matters but timely care isn't available. 

Rupture is about what happens when life divides into before and after, and the systems, identities and assumptions that rupture exposes along the way.

What happens when the life you've spent years building stops working?

Before his rupture, Jay Godfrey had built his identity around success. He went from Wall Street to Parsons and eventually created his own fashion label, dressing celebrities and selling his designs through major retailers.

But success never quite answered the question underneath it all: Am I enough?

When Jay's fashion business collapsed, the loss wasn't only professional. It forced him to confront the identities and belief systems he had built around achievement, approval and worthiness.

In this episode of Rupture: The World of BestGuessistan, Wendy Lurrie talks with Jay about what happens when rupture doesn't just change your circumstances. It changes your understanding of who you are.

They discuss career loss, identity, the internal systems we inherit from childhood, psychedelic-assisted therapy, toxic positivity and negativity, and the difference between what you do and who you actually are.

Wendy also introduces an idea that becomes central to their conversation: many of us are still running an "operating system" built in childhood. Rupture may force us to finally update it.

What happens when you know your brain has changed, but the system wants proof?

For many people living with persistent symptoms after a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury, that question can become part of the rupture itself.

In this episode of Rupture: The World of BestGuessistan, Wendy Lurrie talks with attorney Matthew Passen, partner at Passen Powell Jenkins, about what happens when an invisible injury enters a system built around evidence, documentation, and proof.

Matthew represents people and families in personal injury and wrongful death cases, including traumatic brain injury. He explains why concussion and post-concussive syndrome cases can be particularly challenging, especially when conventional scans appear normal and someone still looks and sounds "fine."

Wendy and Matthew discuss the bias surrounding concussion recovery, how insurers may challenge persistent symptoms, the importance of medical documentation, what can serve as objective evidence, and how lawyers attempt to establish the difference between who someone was before an injury and who they are afterward.
