Don’t settle for speaking about each other; strive to keep speaking to each other. We can speak words of encouragement to our kids, and words of honor to our parents, only if our hearts are set on fighting for a deeper and better relationship. No relationship is over until it’s over, so don’t give up or stop pursuing a better or deeper relationship with each other!

January 21, 2024 211: Hurts, Boundaries, and Healing as Parents and Children
What part can I play in pursuing peace in my relationship as a parent or child?
Passages: 2 Samuel 15:13-37; 2 Samuel 16:15-23;
NT passages: Romans 12:16-18
Parents: David steps back and creates space when Absalom chooses dishonor and threatens to end the relationship. How to know what’s a good boundary vs abdicating role as a parent? David does grieve and lament the pain of the loss of a relationship well. (2 Samuel 15)
Children: Absalom crosses a boundary he never should have by listening to bad counsel from Ahithophel. When our parents withdraw or withhold affection or relational closeness, we can choose to pursue peace or inflame the pain (by honoring or breaking boundaries?).

Parents, your kids never grow out of your unique voice to encourage them. As children, you grow out of the responsibility to obey but you never outgrow the responsibility to honor.
Passages: 2 Samuel 13:38-39; 14:1-24; NT verses for principles (Eph 6:1-4)
Parents: David can see how he would have instructed anyone else to make things right with their kids, but couldn’t see it for Absalom without an outside perspective
Children: Absalom as we will see as the story progresses, becomes bitter in the waiting; his heart was turned against his father David rather than drawn closer toward him

Merry Christmas and welcome to Christmas at Rainier View Online! Jesus is the King of Kings, not because he has overcome the world with force and might. But because he has demonstrated, through his life, death, and resurrection, that reckless love is the only power that can heal the world and bring real peace. Christmas is an invitation to live like this King and to become his agents of overcoming the evil and chaos of this world with good.

Bottom Line: Jesus is the only king who brings true hope.

December 17, 2023 205: Herod: The Builder and Destroyer
Herod was one of Israel’s greatest architects, but also one of its vilest rulers. He taxed hard, lived opulently, was spineless when under pressure, and murdered anyone who got in his way (his brother, his wife, and even infants). Famously, before Herod passed away, he ordered his servants to murder the most beloved people on his staff, so that there would be tears during his funeral. Herod was a straight-up narcissist who ruled for himself.
