Ryan Mains is a veteran and former Firefighter Paramedic for the Woodstock FPD. After developing PTSD, Ryan tried several methods of therapy and treatment including EAP, assistance from the Illinois Firefighter Peer Support, and a 30 day stay at the IAFF Center of Excellence.
After returning from the Center of Excellence, Ryan felt renewed and strong. However, the struggles continued, and shortly after returning, he was deemed unfit for duty due to PTSD.
Prior to his career being cut short, Ryan and his wife had started the Run For Our Lives campaign and annual event. He began the movement as a 'thank you' to the Illinois Firefighter Peer Support group who had helped him through his darkest times and connected him with the IAFF Center.
In the inaugural year, Run For Our Lives was able to donate $20,000 to the ILFFPS in order to provide assistance to other firefighters and paramedics struggling with mental health.
Please check out the Run For Our Lives pages on FB and IG to support the event and follow Ryan on May 22 as he runs 115km to honor the 115 Firefighters and paramedics who died by suicide in 2020.
