Earlier this year the RNIB launched the See Work Differently Work Placement Scheme helping blind and partially sighted people to get on to the career ladder whether it is finding that first job or returning to the workplace after a period of unemployment whether it might be related to sight loss or not. These are paid work placements within the RNIB for blind and partially sighted people to help them gain  vital employment skills and build their confidence within the workplace which could even lead to maybe a permanent role at the RNIB too. 

RNIB Connect Radio’s Toby Davey was joined by RNIB Employment Manager Kudirat Adeniyi along with Lucy Valentine who has not only successfully completed her work placement but has also found permanent employment here at the RNIB too. 

Kudirat began by giving Toby a bit of background to the RNIB See Work Differently Work Placement scheme and how it helps blind and partially sighted people take their first steps onto the career ladder or return to work after time away for whatever reason. 

Lucy then told Toby a bit about her background having been diagnosed in her final year at university and how her sight loss had been for her more of a psychological  barrier stopping her from getting on to graduate schemes and finding work like her sighted friends.  

Lucy also talks about how the RNIB See Work differently Work Placement scheme helped her to gain those vital employment skills, build her confidence and also help her to be more open around talking about her sight loss not only to colleagues at the RNIB but also talking to future employers about her sight loss as Lucy continues on her career path whether that might be within the RNIB or with other employers.
