  • Was Jesus a Legalist? Why the Modern Church Hates God's Law
When people try to live according to God's law, they are frequently accused of being legalists, prompting us to ask a startling question: Was Jesus a Legalist? To truly answer this, we must look past cultural definitions and ask from a scriptural standpoint, What is Legalism? In this episode of The Conquering Truth, we dismantle the widespread confusion surrounding what is properly called legalism and examine how the term is routinely weaponized against those who seek to live holy lives. By looking at Christ and the Law, we demonstrate that while the law is NEVER the means of obtaining righteousness, Jesus explicitly demands our total duty to keep and teach it.Unpacking Matthew 5:17-20, we address the severe judgment reserved for those who subtract from God's commandments—a serious issue confronting many modern "Reformed" churches today regarding doctrines relating to Sabbath-keeping, head coverings, and the second commandment. We also break down Phariseeism vs. Legalism, showing how true Phariseeism actually elevates human traditions over God's statutes rather than faithfully obeying His word. We also discuss how people want scripture to tell us exactly what to do in each situation, but scripture almost always conveys the law through case law and case law needs to be understood and applied to specific situations. This doesn't mean that truth is relative but rather that, as 1 Timothy 1:5-11 teaches, the law can be applied to every area of life and every aspect of sound doctrine. As a ministry of Reformation Baptist Church, we desire to promote a greater understanding of God's Word and His law. Join us as we prove once again that theol

  • The Radical Year of Release (audio)
The Year of Jubilee is traced to Moses' writing in Exodus and Leviticus. Isaiah refers to it in Isaiah 61:1-2. Jesus identified His liberating work by it in Luke 4:17-19. Every fiftieth year Israel was supposed to let the year be a year-long Sabbath. All debts were to be forgiven, all land was to be returned to the family estates, all slaves were to be freed. No record exists showing Israel kept Jubilee. This Sabbath of Sabbaths pointed to Christ the spiritual Jubilee.

  • Loving God in Daily Life
This sermon examines the fourth commandment as a vital expression of loving God in daily life rather than a mere ceremonial obligation. The preacher argues that the Sabbath is founded on creation and redemption, serving to align the believer's entire week with God's will through a disruptive and recalibrating love. By looking to Jesus Christ as the perfect fulfillment of this law, believers are called to observe the day for worship and service, avoiding both legalism and idleness. The central message emphasizes that consecrating the Sabbath deepens intimacy with God and provides a lasting witness to the world. Ultimately, keeping this commandment reflects a heart centered on Christ and His redemptive work.

  • The Divine Equality, Authority, and Judgment of the Son (John 5:15–24)
In this expository address delivered at Benoni Bible Church, we examine the immediate aftermath of the healing at the pool of Bethesda. As the religious authorities escalate their persecution under the banner of Sabbath legalism, the Lord Jesus Christ responds not with a defense of human traditions, but with an explicit assertion of His ontological equality and operational unity with God the Father. This discourse highlights three critical aspects of Christ's claims: Words That Cost (vv. 15–18): The first explicit murder plot is ignited because the religious leaders rightly understood that Jesus was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. Words That Reveal (vv. 19–23): Prefaced by the authoritative double-formula "Truly, truly" (Amen, Amen), Jesus reveals His shared nature, parallel resurrection power, and the reality that all judgment has been committed to the Son so that He may receive equal divine honor. Words That Save (v. 24): The discourse culminates in a magnificent soteriological promise. Using the present and perfect tenses, Christ assures the believer of the present possession of eternal life and a permanent, completed transition out of death and into life. This sermon confronts the modern error of pluralistic religious sincerity, demonstrating that it is impossible to honor the Father while diminishing the Son. A vital study for students of Reformed theology and biblical exposition.
