The PSL suspended their programme at the beginning of this week and they didn’t have fixtures scheduled for next week due to the international week. Phaahla says after briefing the BOG this afternoon, its then up to them on what they decide.

Coming to today, dominating this PSL and COVID-19 talk has been the commitment by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa that the PSL can continue with its programme and play fixtures behind closed doors. Phaahla says they will support the PSL on whatever decision they make.

Deputy Minister of Health Joe Phaahla says the ball is in the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) court to make a decision about their programme going forward after they met this afternoon. Phaahla was one of the stakeholders including the police who made a presentation to the 64 delegates from the 32 clubs and also the nine executive committee members in the Board of Governors (BOG) meeting in Kempton Park.

Yesterday, the South African Rugby Union revealed plans to restructure its rugby competitions as a way to respond to the measures introduced to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The plans could SA franchises both in the Super Rugby and PRO 14 going back to a new ad locally based derby competition as the international competitions are currently suspended.

This issue of PSL playing football behind closed doors now appears to be a hot political potato as the SAFA says they have taken a decision to suspend football programmes of their numbers at all level including their special member PSL.

The PSL today will be holding a Board of Governors (BOG) meeting where about 64 delegates coming from the 32 clubs will be in attendance. After spending the past three days consulting with various stakeholders in the industry, the BOG is expected to make a call on how they will wrap up this season.
