Cape Town City captain Thamsanqa Mkhize was the big winner at the club’s annual awards held on Monday night (13 May 2019). Mkhize was named both Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the season. Gift Links was named the Most Improved Player of the Season, while Zukile Lewuti was named Rookie of the Season. But it was Mkhize who was the man of the hour, and is very proud to be recognised by his team-mates and the club.

Having announced his retirement from the professional game on social media last week, Cape Town City’s veteran midfielder Teko Modise faced the media one last time on Monday night (13 May 2019). Modise played his final game in the Absa Premiership last Saturday against Black Leopards, and now at the age of 36, 18 years after making his debut, he says he has decided to hang up his boots. Modise says it has been an emotional week, and he is very grateful to all the clubs he played for in the past and to everyone at Cape Town City for making his last two years special. City Chairman John Comitis also said he felt honored to be the chairman of the club where Modise chose to retire. Modise’s agent Jazzman Mahlakgane said he was very grateful to Cape Town City for everything they have done for his client.

The Northern Junior Squash Association (NJSA) Closed Tournament finished on a high note at Tuks on Sunday (12 May 2019), with the reigning U16 Champion Awande Malinga successfully defending her title after beating Ashton Weir. Malinga managed to complete all three days without dropping a game, earning herself a spot in the NJSA Top Schools tournament which will take place on the 17th to the 19th of this month, in Pretoria. The 13-year-old was elated with her performance.Malinga continues to excel in her age group as well as in the senior level where she usually competes. Though her father Celumusa Malinga is extremely proud of his daughter but also expressed his anxieties that the more the talented Malinga qualifies for bigger competitions, the more expensive it becomes for him.

Mamelodi Sundowns President Patrice Motsepe says despite winning the record ninth PSL title, his team’s biggest ambition is to win the CAF Champions League again. Sundowns won the Champions League in 2016 but has struggled to reclaim it since. They were recently knocked out by Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals. Motespe also took time to congratulate former star Percy Tau, who is now playing for Belgian second division team Royal Union Saint-Gilloise. He was recently voted the 2018/19 Proximus Player of the Season by a unanimous decision.

Mamelodi Sundowns duo Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane as well as Orlando Pirates’ Thembinkosi Lorch dominate the nominee list for the Premier Soccer League Awards that was announced on Monday (13 May 2019). The trio will be up against each other in three categories, including the ultimate prize of 2018/19 PSL Footballer of the Season when the awards function is held at the ICC in Durban on Sunday (19 May 2019). At the same venue, one of the coaches present, Steve Komphela threw the names of league top-scorer Mwape Musonda and Brazilians’ attacker Gaston Sirino into the list of his pick for best players this season. Two-time Footballer of the Year Siyabonga Nomvethe was also present at the Nominee unveiling and he felt that Lorch was the most deserving of the award. Lorch, after Saturday's 3 - 0 thumping of Polokwane City at Orlando stadium where he scored a brace, believes he had a brilliant season.

Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says her side was thoroughly tested as preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup that kicks off on the 7th of June in France reach the final stages.

Despite beating Polokwane City 3-0 in the final league game at Orlando stadium on Saturday (11 May 2019), Pirates still failed to win the league title, finishing second again to Mamelodi Sundowns.
