Here the Lord Jesus sets himself apart personally, demonstrating his absolute devotion and entire consecration to the work to which his Father had called him. He does it particularly, acting on behalf of his people, representing and serving them in his commitment to bringing them to glory. He does it purposefully, desiring that the gospel truth of his accomplished work might be employed to convert his people to him and conform his people to him, that they might be holy and without blame before him in love. What love he has shown! What a motive for holiness! What a terror to turn away from Christ!

Paul starts off his letter to the believers in Corinth condemning division in the body, then he jumps into what divides beli​evers from unbelievers--the preaching of the cross​, the mystery of God. What separates Jesus from everyone else who ​has ever called himself Messiah is the mystery of the cross. Jesus was executed on what the Greeks called the *stauros*. Stauros literally means stake, but over the years it has come to be known as the cross. No one would ever expect that a man who was crucified, arguably the worst way to execute someone, would be so important in world history the worldwide calendar would be marked by his birth. The mystery is not the crucifixion--many people have been crucified. The mystery is that God accepted his sacrifice as payment for the sin of everyone who believes​. He was God made flesh, who died​ on the stauros​, but was raised from death and now lives and reigns in the heavenlies. That is the mystery we discuss in this session.

The Help of God (1 Sam 7:7–12) Israel repented, and the enemy appeared. They were afraid, but instead of reaching for the ark they reached for prayer. A lamb was offered. Samuel cried. God heard. Heaven thundered. Israel pursued. Victory came. Then Samuel raised a stone. What should we remember? The battle after repentance does not mean repentance was wrong. Weakness can drive us into the safest place, dependence upon God. Prayer must rest upon the sacrifice and intercession of Christ. God's help does not excuse us from action. And past mercy must never be forgotten. So when the next Philistine appears, do not merely stare at the size of the army. Look at your Ebenezer.
