On this week’s episode, Stacey is joined by Jay Hocutt, a Construction/Heavy Equipment Program Manager who works for UCOR, which stands for United Cleanup Oak Ridge LLC. Based in Tennessee, UCOR is the lead cleanup contractor for the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management.
Stacey and Jay discuss:
* Jay was in the U.S. military for ten years working with tanks, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business, then worked in restaurants for ten years.
* As a restauranter, he saw all kinds of work-related incidents, including slips, trips, knife cuts, burns, you name it.
* After working in the hospitality industry, he worked for a drilling company and became a certified safety professional (as well as a certified well driller!).
* How safety has been the foundation of nearly all of Jay’s various jobs.
* Writing UCOR’s construction and heavy equipment safety program.
* How safety software has evolved over the years.
* The benefits of using virtual reality (VR) in safety.
* The need for safety professionals to be able to adapt to new situations.

On this week’s episode, Stacey is joined by Scott DeBow, Principal HS&E expert at Avetta, a provider of supply chain risk management software.
Stacey and Scott discuss:
* How wonderful it would be if kids dreamed of entering into the safety profession when they grow up.
* How the safety industry is always a challenge.
* That safety should never be boring, yet it’s hard to make, say, compliance interesting at a human level.
* The following common safety assumption: “if we reduce the frequency of safety incidents, then we’ll also reduce the severity of safety incidents.”
* How people closest to the risk are the richest source of intel.
* Scott’s working title (which is very tongue-in-cheek!) for his next book is “I’m Sorry I Stuck My Finger In Your Eye, But It Was Necessary”! (You’ll have to listen to the whole podcast to get this one!)

On this week’s episode, Stacey is joined by Justin Maynard of Onward Energy.
Justin is a former firefighter and EMT who transitioned recently into the safety profession. In this episode, he discusses deciding to go back to school to learn about safety, even though he was in his mid-30s, worked a full-time job, and had a wife and two kids.
On his career change, Justin said: “It's never too late to do something new.”
He also experienced frustration and doubt about his choice. On his first day back at school, he thought, “What have I gotten myself into? This is horrible.”
Yet he stuck with it, graduated three years later, and is now at the beginning of his safety career with Onward Energy!

In this episode, Stacey is joined by Michael Circle of Onward Energy, a power generator with a portfolio of solar, wind, and gas generation projects in the U.S.
Michael, who is both an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist and a PR Specialist, and Stacey explore the following in this episode:
* Michael initially decided to become a safety professional because he heard that safety was “lucrative.” But after he attended his first-ever OSHA class, he fell in love with safety.
* How even when we’re dealing with extremely serious topics — such as fall protection and electrical safety hazards — those of us in the safety profession can still find these topics exciting.
* Looking at safety as a combination of various other trades, including law, medicine, and enforcement.
* Michael’s dad lost a finger in a word accident.
* What excites Michael most about the safety profession today, which includes implementing the relatively new 24-foot rule for fixed ladders and ladder protection systems.

His experiences and studies led him to the question “How can we inspire people, team members to do right things? For the right reasons, even when no one's watching?” The key is how to positively leverage human nature to move beyond mere compliance.
