What does Islam say about how we treat people based on their wealth, status, or job?

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we address a subtle yet destructive disease that quietly fractures our homes, our communities, and even our places of worship: classism. We step away from social expectations and look instead at how Islam measures human worth—not by financial status, education, neighborhood, or influence, but by taqwa (God-consciousness) and the state of one's heart.

The Quran addresses all of humanity to remind us that our true value before Allah isn't found in what can be seen on the outside. We explore how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ challenged the deep-seated tribalism and social hierarchies of his time, uniting people from every background—from wealthy leaders to freed slaves—to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in prayer where all social class disappears.

We also reflect on how easily classism sneaks into our daily lives today, from preferential treatment in our institutions to the subtle comments our children hear us say about others. The episode tackles the root cause behind this behavior — arrogance — and unpacks the Prophet's ﷺ definition of arrogance as rejecting the truth and looking down upon people.

Ultimately, the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah do not allow us to judge a person's worth by their possessions, profession, or appearance.

If Allah looks not at our appearance or wealth, but at our hearts and deeds, what is He finding when He looks inside ours?

What did Allah Himself say about Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we step away from the historians, poets, and biographers and look instead at how the Quran describes the Prophet ﷺ—his mercy, his compassion, his character, his gentleness, and the concern he carried for others.

The Quran describes Muhammad ﷺ as a mercy to all the worlds and as a messenger deeply concerned by the suffering of others. We explore what that mercy looked like in his life, including his response to the people of Ta'if who rejected, insulted, and physically harmed him. Even when given the opportunity for revenge, he chose hope and mercy instead.
We also reflect on the Prophet's ﷺ magnificent character and the idea that if we want to see the Quran translated into human behavior, we can look to his life. He didn't simply recite the revelation—he lived it.

From his gentleness after the Battle of Uhud to his patience with those who spoke against him, the episode explores what it means to respond to hardship without becoming hard-hearted, to forgive rather than hold onto resentment, and to remain a source of light even when surrounded by darkness.
Ultimately, the Quran does not present Muhammad ﷺ merely as someone to admire. It presents him as an example to follow.

And that leaves us with a challenge:

If the Prophet ﷺ was a light, what kind of light are we bringing into the lives of the people around us?

What does justice look like when you have power?

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we explore the leadership of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through one of its defining qualities: justice.

The Prophet ﷺ did not reserve justice for those he liked, those who agreed with him, or those without influence. He insisted that rights be protected and that accountability apply equally—even when the person involved was powerful, influential, or close to him.

We explore what this teaches us about favoritism, nepotism, privilege, and the temptation to make exceptions for ourselves and those we love. We reflect on the Prophetic teaching that communities are destroyed when people of status are allowed to escape consequences while the same laws are applied harshly to those without power.

But justice was not the Prophet's ﷺ only quality. His leadership was also marked by empathy, humility, mercy, and a deep awareness of the emotions and needs of others. He listened to people, understood their circumstances, and responded with compassion.

We also consider a profound Qur'anic principle: do not let your dislike of someone cause you to abandon justice. Even when we disagree with someone or have no affection for them, their rights remain their rights.

Ultimately, this episode asks us to reconsider what leadership really means.

Can we be just when justice costs us something? Can we uphold the rights of others when it would be easier to look the other way?

The Prophetic example reminds us that true leadership is not simply about having power.

It is about what you do with it.

What does it really mean to be a leader?

In a world where leadership can become synonymous with power, status, influence, and self-interest, the leadership of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offers a radically different model: leadership as service.

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we explore the qualities that made the Prophet ﷺ an extraordinary leader—not only as a spiritual guide, but as a community leader, teacher, judge, statesman, husband, and commander.

Whether building the mosque or enduring hunger alongside his companions, he led by example rather than simply giving instructions.

Racism, colorism, slavery, and social hierarchy are not new problems. But more than 1,400 years ago, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ challenged the prejudices and hierarchies of the society around him and taught a radically different measure of human worth.

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we explore the Prophet's ﷺ teachings on race, equality, dignity, and human brotherhood.

We begin with the reality of slavery and social hierarchy in the world in which the Prophet ﷺ lived, and examine how his teachings encouraged the emancipation of slaves, condemned abuse, and elevated the dignity of those who had been marginalized.

Through the story of Bilal رضي الله عنه, we see a man who went from being brutally enslaved to becoming one of the most honored companions of the Prophet ﷺ—and the voice of the adhan heard throughout generations.

We explore the Prophetic teaching that human beings are not made more honorable by their race, color, lineage, wealth, or social status. Instead, honor is connected to consciousness of God.

We also confront the reality that racism and classism can still exist within Muslim communities and societies today. The episode asks us not simply to condemn racism in others, but to examine ourselves: How would we feel if we were treated differently because of the way we look, where we come from, or who we are?

At its heart, this is an episode about empathy.

Because if we truly want to follow the Prophet ﷺ, there can be no place for racism in our faith, our homes, or our communities.

Who was Muhammad ﷺ before he became a prophet?

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we take a step back from the familiar story of prophethood and look at the man people knew before the revelation.

Long before he proclaimed his message, Muhammad ﷺ was known among his people as Al-Amin—the trustworthy. His reputation for honesty and integrity was so strong that people entrusted him with their most valuable possessions. Even when he was forced to leave Mecca under threat, he made sure the belongings entrusted to him were returned to their owners.

We explore the experiences that shaped his character, including his own experience as an orphan and his deep concern for orphans, the vulnerable, and those society often overlooked. We reflect on his treatment of others, his patience, his inclusiveness, and his commitment to creating harmony rather than division.

We also examine what happened when his message challenged the traditions, status, and interests of those around him—and what that teaches us about our own resistance to change, our egos, and our willingness to seek truth even when it challenges what we already believe.

Ultimately, this episode is an invitation to learn before we judge.

Because sometimes the best way to understand a message is to first understand the character of the person who carried it.

We live in a world that rewards constant reaction. We speak, post, comment, defend, condemn, and respond—often before we have taken the time to listen or reflect.

But what can we learn from the silence of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?

In this episode of The Prophetic Compass, we explore a dimension of the Prophet's ﷺ character that is often overlooked: his silence.

His silence was not emptiness, weakness, or passivity. It could be reflection. It could be compassion. It could be emotional intelligence. It could be restraint. And sometimes, silence itself was the wisest response.

We explore the prophetic teaching to “say that which is good or be silent,” and consider what it means for our marriages, families, leadership, relationships, and especially our lives on social media.

We also look at the Prophet's ﷺ remarkable ability to listen—to the elderly, women, young people, those who came with questions, and even those who approached him with hostility. His example reminds us that sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person is simply our undivided attention.

And finally, we are challenged to practice a prophetic pause: before responding to something that triggers us, stop and ask:

Does this need to be said?
Does it need to be said right now?

Because sometimes, strength is not found in having the last word.

Sometimes, strength is knowing when not to speak.

Few people in human history have been so deeply loved by millions—and yet so profoundly misunderstood.
