  • Lent Series: Creation Care

For the 2020 Lenten season, we’re presenting a series of five evening sessions featuring various members of our community telling stories related to their own sense of calling or vocation.

In this first episode we have two speakers, each addressing how creation care has become a part of their sense of Christian calling. The first speaker is Zoe Matties, the Manitoba program director for A Rocha Canada, an international Christian environmental group writing a new story of possibility and hope in the midst of the crisis of climate change and environmental degradation. Following Zoe, you’ll hear from Karen Cornelius, whose work as a visual artist and printmaker is woven together with her passion for creation care.

We would encourage you to listen to Zoe's’ more detailed presentation from our January 2020 ideaExchange evening, and to take a look at a video of Karen’s Altered Landscapes performative liturgy from November 2019

For centuries the Christian church has organized the year into liturgical seasons. In so doing, it makes sacred the ordinary time of a twelve-month calendar.  By sanctifying our hours and days this way the church traces the mystery of salvation and the course of salvation history.

Not every denomination observes the church calendar. Even within the Anglican communion there is some confusion about what these seasons and feast days are all about.

In this episode Jamie Howison introduces the idea of living our lives according to a different concept of time and in short episodes to follow throughout the year ahead he’ll be back again to explain each season as the months unfold.

  • The Poet's Ear for Gospel

Jamie Howison speaks with Malcolm Guite, a priest, chaplain to Girton College in Cambridge, theologian, musician and poet. The author of not only theological books but also numerous collections of poetry, Malcolm’s latest book is After Prayer: New sonnets and other poems, published in November 2019 by Canterbury Press. In an endorsement for the 2012 Sounding the Seasons collection, the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams commented, “These pieces have the economy and pungency of all good sonnets, and again and again, offer deep resources for prayer and meditation to the reader,” to which the American poet Luci Shaw added, “Each of Malcolm Guite’s sonnets is like a Celtic knot, with threads of devotion and theology cunningly woven into shining emblems of truth and beauty.”

To find out more about Malcolm and his work, visit his website, where you will find recordings of him reading his poetry along with all sorts of other good things. You can also follow him on Facebook.
