The narrative that begins in Leviticus chapter 8 with the ordination of Aaron and his sons continues into chapter 9 without interruption. The inaugural service in the newly constructed Tabernacle is conducted by Aaron and his sons. What does Moses do? How does the first service in the Tabernacle set a precedent for future services? When the risen Lord Jesus appeared to His disciples on Easter Sunday evening, His first words to them were “Peace be with you.” Thomas missed it. But a week later, Thomas was there when Jesus appeared again, and His first words were the same, “Peace be with you.” On both Sundays, it was the power of the word that Jesus spoke to His disciples which set their hearts at peace. How does this work for us today?

Leviticus chapter 8 tells the story of the consecration of the priesthood. The ritual of ordination lasts for seven days. Aaron and his sons are not consecrated by a single act, but by the whole process which requires them not to leave the entrance of the Tent of Meeting for any reason until the ordination week is complete. The signs of Spring are everywhere. The birds are singing. Squirrels are chasing each other. The buds on the trees are showing up. The grass is changing from dull brown to a dull green. Every once in a while the bud of a flower emerges from the cool soil. Life is waking up. This is a foreshadowing of things to come, when Jesus will return to raise the dead. He is risen indeed! We are watching and waiting as we listen to the Word of God. In the early church, catechumens spent the forty days of Lent preparing to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism at the Easter Vigil. On this joyous occasion, all of us are invited to meditate on the blessings of our own baptism.

We continue our Lenten series, “Guilt by Association,” as we see the consequence of our guilt: The Son of God, suffering and dying on a cross. And yet, in this seemingly hopeless scene, we also find salvation from our guilt.

This evening our Lord Jesus takes us back to “the night in which He was betrayed,” when He spoke those simple words to His disciples, “Take and eat, this is my body, given for you. Take and drink; this cup is the new testament in my blood, shed for you.” As we receive the Lord’s Supper together, we do this in remembrance of Him, proclaiming His death until He comes.

E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come!
