Our guest today is Andy King, world champion surfing coach of Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina, among others. We delved into his youth where he was well on the way to becoming a pro surfer, until one night out in Cronulla he was king hit and suffered a catastrophic brain injury that changed the course of his life. We spoke about the sunken place he was in, deciding to get back in the water after 14 doctors told him he would be disabled for the rest of his life, the mental challenge of surviving without hearing or equilibrium, his comeback to mentoring young surfers for Red Bull and then coaching Mick Fanning to three world titles, receiving a wake up call from Andy Irons, the development of his coaching philosophy and disagreeing with the “all or nothing” mindset when it comes to becoming a champion, partying with the “lunatic” Fisher, and now coaching current world champion Gabriel Medina, who he says has taught him more about life in one year than he’s learnt in the past 10 combined.
