Arsenal fought Herbert Chapman’s former team Huddersfield Town for the title but, tragically, on January 6, 1934 Chapman suddenly died of pneumonia, leaving a grieving team to pick themselves up under the stewardship of Joe Shaw and Tom Whittaker to seal the league title at Stamford Bridge for the second consecutive season. He was Herbert Chapman's first signing for the Gunners in 1925 having left Woolwich Arsenal as a teenager in a row over expenses.
