Opposition groups called for a boycott of the by-elections. Accordingly, the struggle against the government has intensified by uniting the opposition parties.
The meeting was chaired by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, leader of the National Movement for a Just Society.
Leaders of political parties including Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, Manoganesan and Digambaram of the United People's Alliance, Ruwan Wijewardene, Deputy Leader of the United National Party, Mavai Senathirasa, Leader of the Sri Lanka Tamil National Party and Speaker Sumanthiran are attending the meeting.
Sajid Premadasa said that the country was moving towards an era of darkness and everyone should work together to bring light back to the country. Furthermore, the future of all working together is discussed in detail.
Meanwhile, reports from the United People's Power say that the focus is now on working with the United National Party. At the same time, it is reported that the focus is on forming an alliance with the United People's Power partners and joining the United National Party.
It is also reported that other parties are currently working together with the United National Party.
