Scattered throughout the tiny Santa Rosa brewery are hints to Hunt’s personality.

Doppio Zero’s first San Francisco pizzeria opened this week in Hayes Valley, marking the third Bay Area outpost for the burgeoning mini-chain. The pizzeria has taken over the former home of Caffe Delle Stelle (395 Hayes St.) at the corner of Gough and Hayes streets. Doppio Zero’s owners, Angelo Sannino and Gianni Chiloiro, the same folks behind the Meatball Bar in both Hayes Valley and the FiDi, already have Doppio Zero shops in Cupertino and Mountain View.

San Francisco’s historic Payne Mansion, a $10,000 per night Airbnb booking in San Francisco’s Western Addition last year, is becoming a hotel called the Mansion on Sutter Hotel, and within it will be a new restaurant called 1881, all set to debut this fall. The restaurant’s name is a reference to the year the Payne Mansion was originally built by Theodore Payne. It is currently listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Bear’s Lair in Berkeley, a campus hangout for UC Berkeley students from 1962 to 2012, is reopening as Bear’s Lair Tavern, a new bar and grill under the guidance of Oakland chef Reign Free and pioneering San Francisco chef David Lawrence. The 2012 closure of the pub caused much chagrin for Cal students past and present, so the return should turn some heads around campus.

There’s a new, yet slightly familiar restaurant opening today in SoMa. Called ALX Gastropub, it’s a spinoff of Alexander’s Steakhouse and located right off the corner of Third and Folsom, only a stone’s throw from SFMOMA, the Museum of the African Diaspora and the newly-revamped Moscone Center. ALX is billed as an upscale pub, one that’s being led chef Jessie Lugo, a veteran of the Alexander’s Steakhouse restaurant family.

The $29 Madison Avenue Salad at Freds at Barneys in New York. Freds is an upscale eatery with locations in New York, Chicago, and Beverly Hills — and it’s now expanding to San Francisco. The $30 chopped chicken salad at the New York Freds at Barneys. A new location will open this fall in San Francisco’s Union Square. Barneys New York wants to bring New York’s world of power lunches and upscale weekend brunches to San Francisco.

The Sun Parasol line of mandevillas has proven to be a popular way to add extravagant pink and red flowers to a sunny spot in one’s garden. Now there’s an exceptionally lovely apricot entry to this line. Like the other varieties, this vine sports a seemingly endless parade of eye-catching, 5-inch flowers from summer through fall. What’s new is the two-tone apricot blooms.
