Once upon a time, there was a Roly Poly Snowman named Samuel.
Samuel lived on the top of a steep hill in Paducah. Every day, he
looked down over the town, and smiled inside, for he was the master of all he
surveyed.
One day, Samuel decided
he would have an adventure. So, he began to shift his snowy base
back and forth…….and eventually, he started to roll down the steep Paducah
hill…….Faster and FASTER he rolled until he rolled right into town.
Samuel the snowman
rolled into Frank’s Fruit store……”What is a snowman doing rolling through my
fruit store??” exclaimed Frank. Samuel threw his snowy head back
and sang, “Catch me….Catch me….if you will…..For I am rolling down the
hill” And, Samuel continued to roll, picking up some orange slices
for eyes, and a big banana nose.
On and on Samuel rolled
until he came to Carlton’s Candy Store. He rolled in, scattering boxes of
candy high into the air! “OH NO!” yelled Carlton. “What is a
snowman doing in my candy shop?” Samuel threw his snowy head back
and sang, “Catch me…..Catch me, if you will. For, I am rolling down the
hill.” And as he rolled, he picked up some butter brickle on the end of
his banana nose.
Samuel rolled and rolled
until he came to Betsy’s Broom and Button shop. As he rolled in the
door, buttons and brooms were in mad disarray, and they flew
everywhere. Betsy was disconcerted as she cried, “Leave my shop,
you pesky snowman. Look at what you have done!!!!” But,
Samuel, the Roly Poly snowman, simply laughed and sang, “Catch me…..Catch me,
if you will. For, I am rolling down the hill.” And, as
he gingerly rolled out of Betsy’s Broom and Button shop, he was sporting one of
Betsy’s lovely brooms for arms, and 3 big bright golden buttons down the front
of his chest.
Samuel the snowman rolled into Mr.
McGregor’s Fruit store. As he rolled, produce was everywhere.
Mrs. Lucas, who was buying lettuce, tripped and fell. Little Kathy,
who had come to purchase carrots for mother, tried to catch Samuel……but, Samuel
threw back his head, laughed and sang, “Catch me…..Catch me….if you will.
For I am rolling down the hill.” Samuel the snowman, picked up speed as
he rolled through Mr. McGregor’s store. He also picked up some red
pepper slices for a wide, smiling snowman mouth.
On and on, Samuel the
Snowman rolled. By this time, many of the children in the little town of
Paducah were beginning to run after him. They really wanted to catch him,
before he could do more damage. But, Samuel the snowman was too fast.
He rolled and rolled
until he came to Wanda’s Woolens. “Out….Out, Snowman,” yelled
Wanda. “What is a snowman doing in a knitting store?”
But, Samuel the Snowman, rolled back his head, and sang in a resonant snowman
voice, “Catch me….Catch me if you will. For, I am rolling down the
hill!” And, as he rolled out of Wanda’s Woolens, he was sporting a lovely
handmade red woolen scarf and a pair of red mittens on the end of his
broomstick hands.
Samuel rolled and rolled
until he came to Hank’s Haberdashers….on the edge of town. As he rolled
into Hank’s Hat shop, all the hats Hank had carefully placed on the shelves,
came toppling down. Hats were scattered EVERYWHERE! “OH NO…
….Whatever shall I do?” lamented Hank. But, Samuel the snowman, just
shook his head, and laugh
