  • Thirumandhiram 139- Meaning of Guru |

"Who is a Guru?" What is the benefit of seeing the Guru, listening to his words, chanting his holy name, and contemplating him?

Clear insight comes from seeing the holy form of the Guru,
Clear insight comes from chanting the holy name of the Guru,
Clear insight comes from listening to the holy words of the Guru,
Clear insight comes from contemplating the form of the Guru.

Clarity. In today's situations, for mental clarity and intellectual clarity, merely beholding the holy form of the Guru is enough—clarity will arise.

Simply chanting his holy name repeatedly is enough—clarity will be born. Listening to the words of the Guru—even a single word, a small word—listening to the Guru’s words is enough—clarity will occur.

Contemplating the Guru’s form (Guru Uru Sinthithal)—just thinking about the Guru is enough. Constantly holding that thought at all times is enough—clarity occurs.

Who is this Guru? 'Gu' means complete, absolute darkness. 'Ru' means the light within the darkness, the Supreme Light (Paranjothi). Thus, the Guru is the Supreme Light (Paranjothi) as the Supreme Being (Paramporul) amidst complete darkness.

That Supreme Light fills everywhere—here, there, and everywhere—as the One and as All. Therefore, Lord Nandi declared, "The Guru is Shivam." Saint Thirumoolar said, "The Guru and Shivam are not different. The Guru is Shivam, and Shivam is the Guru."

So, seeing that Lord who is the holy form and the Light; chanting the holy name, the five-lettered mantra (Panchakshara); listening to his holy words about the Divine and living accordingly; contemplating that Shiva-consciousness which is a mass of light—in that very contemplation lies clarity.

Therefore, here, the Guru is the ultimate Supreme Being, the Primordial Lord (Aadhi Bhagavan). The Supreme Lord residing in the ultimate realm, the Shivam residing in the Shiva realm. Thus, beholding that Shiva-entity as a form, merely beholding that entity brings clarity to the mind.

Chanting the name of that True Substance (Meiporul), which is the Shiva-entity, brings clarity. What does that True Substance say? "I am everything. I am Brahman. I am the Atman (Soul). I am you. You are me. Both you and I are only 'I'."

So, listening to that word "I", imprinting it, and constantly contemplating "I, I, I"—that "I" is a True Substance that transcends the physical body, transcends the mind, transcends the intellect, transcends the waking state, transcends the dream state, and transcends deep sleep.

I am that Supreme Being. Thus, I am the Guru, I am Shivam, I am the Primordial Power (Aadhi Shakti), I am the Supreme Power (Para Shakti). That "I" shines inside this body, inside the flesh as life, and inside life as consciousness. Transcending the body and transcending life, the inner True Substance is Shivam. That Shivam is the Guru. Seeing such a Guru, such a Shivam, in the form of Light, and chanting the name through the mantra "Namah Shivaya" or the name "Paranjothi" gives us a wonderful clarity.

That holy word—a single word, a small word—that is the Guru’s word. That itself is the sacred mantra (Tirumandiram). Listening to the Tirumandiram daily brings clarity. As one continuously contemplates that Shivam: Shivam is not different from oneself; the Guru is not different from oneself. "I am That" (Naan Athu).

Whatever exists beyond the five cosmic functions—creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment, and grace—that alone is "I". That "I" itself is the Guru. That Guru shines in the form of light above the head. In the thousand-petaled lotus flower (Sahasrara), the Guru exists as that form of light.

Those who have realized that Guru within themselves as Light are always in a state of clarity. It is this clarity that leads a human being to the birthless state. To attain the supreme deathless state, one must remember the Lord of Supreme Grace Light (Arutperunjothi).

Thus, that Lord exists within oneself in the form of light. Although it pervades everything, it also exists within me. It exists within me as light; inside me, it exists inside life. Transcending the body and transcending life, because it dwells inside (Ull), it is Kadavul (God / Inner Being). Thus, that God is "I". The magnificent power called "I" is God.

Beholding such a God as light within oneself, experiencing it as consciousness—in that state of experiencing the light and consciousness: "To know and know and let go is wisdom; to know and know and receive is wisdom; to know and know and perceive is wisdom; to know and know and gain clarity is wisdom."

By this true consciousness (Mei Unarvu) that knows, is known, and presses through the six energy centers (Aaradhaarams) beyond the Aajna chakra—this true consciousness itself is the Guru. Those who wear that Guru on their head (crown) will never, ever have any worry. Therefore, attaining a good Guru, a Satguru, in this birth; approaching that Guru, listening to his holy form and the wonderful words he speaks; and contemplating those very words—accepting one word, a small word, the word of the Guru and walking by it in life—will bring clarity in life and enable one to attain the supreme deathless state.

While still in this physical body, one can attain the state of liberation (Mukti). So, what dies, and what is immortal? This physical body made of the five elements (Panchabhutas) perishes and disappears. Inside this perishing, disappearing body lies the imperishable substance—that imperishable substance is the Divine Essence (Semporul), it is the Life Essence (Uyirpporul), it is the Shiva Essence (Shivapporul), it is the True Substance (Meiporul).

Those who have realized that True Substance have no fear anywhere, in anything, ever. Those who remain with that Divine consciousness and Guru consciousness everywhere and in everything will always remain with clarity and live with joy.

Therefore, attain a proper Satguru to receive this true consciousness. Accepting that one word, that small word, the Guru's word, and experiencing it in the forehead and at the crown of the head—those who experience this will never, ever have worry. It is always joy. Therefore, to be joyful every day, seek the Guru.

That Guru is not outside; that Guru exists within us as consciousness. Abundant blessings for you to receive that consciousness and live happily forever. Abundant blessings for everyone to receive all goodness, live in bliss, and for the world to attain peace, harmony, and happiness.
