Introduction to the Elegie by Fauré New Repertoire Work At the Cello School with Sarnia Podclass
hi tail tellers welcome to um an introduction to the elegy by uh gabrielle fourier um it's a grade eight standard piece but i'm not sure if it's on the uh curriculum at the moment but it's a favorite of the um of the grade 8 abrsm

syllabus so it's a really good one to get to grips with now the version that i'm going to use for our lessons is the um the sherman instrumental library version from the cello collection eight pieces by eight composers and what i like about it is that you can log on to hal leonard and they've you can play an accompaniment with or without the cello so you can play a long twitch and you can set the speed and you can set sections it's a little bit um awkward to set the sections um but you can sort of get around it there's another way of doing it you can you go on to musescore which is we'll be doing that when we start and we'll be breaking off sections and using a digital backing and that just helps focus on timing and intonation it can be if you have to understand that when you're playing along to a a digital instrument um you know something is pretending to be a cello basic it doesn't really sound anything like it um you're not there to um copy the uh articulation the the digital version never articulates and but it does have things like volume timing and uh key and intonation so that that's what you used to follow it's a really good tool for when you first start learning a piece now tomorrow um what we're going to be doing is we're going to be um looking at things like sections the highest note the lowest note and um where we're going to be going on the strings things like that and we're also going to be doing the c minor this is in c minor so we're going to be doing the c minor scale and some c minor um uh arpeggios etc so we're going to be really playing around with the key and what i want you to do in preparation for this is to listen to it over and over again i was a great recording on um wiki but i'm going to embed that on the tail teller site i'll pop it on the blog and if you pop along to tell telecom and onto the cello school page it's all free of course and you'll be able to play it and it's a great way to get to know it um really listen and if you can you know put it on when you go to bed put it on when you wake up in the morning really here let it seep in um in the way that children learn from the suzuki method you know we can take that to our level now and we can study the nuances the ev you know every single breath will be known to us um if you listen to it so well that you can sing it and hum it you will find that you your playing becomes instinctive and you'll be able to pick it up really really well even the quick bits now we if we look at it um it's quite sparse the first section and then it seems to get a little bit busier from b and then the chaos when you turn over the page um and that rising uh you know when you watch a performer doing this you can't the fingers you can't see the move you know what i do feel is that a lot of performers can get quite muddy so we're going to be looking when we work on this we're going to be looking at keeping each of those notes beautifully clear even at speed okay so um they're on the same bow movement but i just think if you make them too slurred you just end up with a sort of mucky mess and i i'm going to avoid that at all cost um and then there's a sort of relief when it uh kind of returns to the um you know that kind of sparseness um and you know all the notes can be really they can really ring and we can uh lots of vibrato lots and lots of vibrato so it gives us a chance to work on that as well um so i think that's about it for the um introduction as i say if you could come tomorrow with the score um which you can download i think from musescore or if not you could take a screenshot screenshots are great if you've got an ipad...

hi tail tellers welcome to go tell aunt rody this is a recording by the wonderful wonderful vaper punk now what i'd like you to do when you're listening to the recording is to think about the slow notes and the quick notes so for example in the first bar go tell and roadie slow quick quick slow slow do you see it's interesting isn't it and the other thing i'd like you to do is take your finger and point to the notes as you hear them and move along as if you were reading with your finger and then of course you can play it again and you can dance to it and clap to it and really get to know it play it over and over again whenever you can it's a really good fun version okay so i think that's all our lessons for today but tomorrow we'll be working on some more so try and get some practice in and in the other lesson that i did earlier i really explained to you how to get some clarity in the notes and the tricky bits so if you can listen to all of the lessons that are related to this piece if you're working on it okay guys enjoy it's such fun hi everybody my name's vaperpunk and today i've been playing cello go and turn off roadie it's so good i love playing go and tell challenge rosie see if you can join in with me i love suzuki
