okay guys sorry about that i accidentally turned the recording device off now let's have a look i want to tell you about how keeping your hands really when we swap from this g and we go to the open a if you

avoid lifting your fingers too far away from the string all you want to do is move across

and your fingers are in exactly the same position as they were on the other string but if you start moving things around flying around i call it flying fingers you're going to really struggle to come back to the right place think of think of the strings as if they have lines going across them and and you need to stick to those lines because these lines represent it's an axis and they represent the notes okay so let's see what i mean let's play two d's with no fingers down but ready for this e just ready for it so let's play two d's

now let's put one finger down and play two of those ease now put three fingers down so you keep all your fingers down and now all your fingers down including fourth now you're going to swap strings don't fly around with your fingers you could play that a actually with your four fingers still down but you have to be quite dexterous to do that so lift your fingers very gently play the two a's and then just move sideways okay so all i did there apart from getting something which i didn't mean to do i just moved sideways to play two ways and now i'm i'm very very close to the string still one finger down three fingers down and four fingers down

okay and now for this piece we can see in front of us we've got to play those d's again i've still got my four fingers down how can i go wrong provided i was right in the first place i'm gonna be right again aren't i as long as we keep still

now your third finger should be exactly where it was

and your first should be where it was and now those open a's now this is where it gets tricky move across for those two g's lovely now if you've got all four fingers down i hope so now you're going to play three fingers down and then one finger down and then open open

do you see what i mean to keep everything really closed really close together rather really close together because your position here is exactly as the opposition is going to be here exactly the same except on the string next door and this is what you've got to keep in mind with the cello even if you're playing a really complicated piece of music know that all you've got to go is sideways or one space up or two space ups two spaces up do you see what i mean i mean it's so easy isn't it when you think of it like that imagine drawing it on a map and following it with your finger you're just going straight along you just need to be in the same place but on a different string okay so should we do that one more time together um sort of this pace one two three four after four one two three four

swap strings all fingers are down just lift one up yes oh we should play two of those sorry come back down

and across into the same position

okay my phone's covering up um the uh the end of the d major scale in the suzuka book so i was guessing there so yes they're asking us to play uh four of those d's as we come back down but actually if you're doing grade one uh abrsm they're going to ask you to do it okay at that sort of one each and you go up and then you come straight down okay so guess what i'm going to leave this on a bit do we like that do we like that [ __ ] it's the romantic i mean you can do it to some others but let's keep the romantic cup on i'm going to turn it off a bit i'm going to leave you to listen to that and play your d major scale and if you like learn it by heart

at royal clients and we're going to have a look today at the d major scale now this is the really the uh the nucleus of all suzuki music this d major scale is going to really set in your brain and your body and your fingertips and your bowing arm how to position yourself when you play these notes but not just these notes because this pattern that you learn during this scale is that's what you're going to take with you from now on as we work through the suzuki books the positioning of the hands the tonal recognition the understanding the vibration when you're in tune we call that intonation and when that's perfect and when it's spot on you learn through the d major scale to hear the correct vibration so d major is something that you should do i

would suggest every single day from now on until you're too old to play anymore or you decide that you just don't want to play d major is a fundamental scale for suzuki method but it's also really really good training for us to remind ourselves because when you first sit down at the ceiling if you haven't played through even a few hours you have to warm up it's really important to warm up you know you're like an athlete really you're the same as an athlete you wouldn't go to play rugby or cricket without stretching you wouldn't do ballet i do ballet and we'd never we spend the first five or ten minutes of ballet warming up stretching our muscles and that's what we have to do with our fingers when we when we play the cello we need to get them to learn once again to stretch and of course we do these warming up stretching exercises i've got a blog for that um i'm not a vlog a podcast so um you can look for that and i'll i'll make sure it's live tomorrow but just the the little ways that you warm up your neck and your arms and your shoulders and your bum and your knees and your feet on the floor and

and we feel the center of the earth through our toes and our heels we're at one we do all of that and then we do the scales just to warm up and get ready and prepare us and the wonderful thing um about scales is that they they're like learning without knowing that you're learning so if you do the d major scale anytime you come upon a song that's in d major you're almost automatically by a seemingly cheat way method going to be able to play it because you've done the d major scale so i'm a real stickler for scales but i'm going to try and make them really good fun and i'm going to try and think of ways that we can add a bit of vibe to our

scales practice okay but today we're going to just look at fingering because the fingering that we're going to do today is going to set you up for book one and book two and book three but mostly for book one of the suzuki methods okay the suzuki school method book one so we need to know this now i'm assuming that you've already listened to my other classes and that you've been doing all the uh exercises on the d string for posture and if you haven't you'll have to go and look those up and i'll um i'll make sure that they're live i might have put them somewhere else so i'll make sure all those podcasts are live so that you can access them

because i want you to be as good a cellist as you possibly want to be that's my aim so what do we do first we've already talked about relaxing now i have my inner knee against one side of the cello and and low down on my cuff because i really like to feel the vibration people have different ways of feeling the vibration and then i've got part of the cello under my under my um breast area and actually touching my sternum and then i've got another knee which touches just the ridge of the cello the other side when i play a note i can feel it on the inside of my knees and on my breastbone and this is a wonderful way of hearing vibration it's really

good to it sounds odd to say hearing a feeling but the thing is noise is...
