  • EP47 | cutters | Most folks agree - Life's a garden, dig it ... Read more

Howdy rockers, this week we had none other than local hardcore legends cutters joining us in the Collingwood studio. Al and Brendan popped by to share some wisdom. We spoke primarily about their most recent release, Psychic Injury and also their up coming recording, yet to be recorded, yet to be named. I'm interested to find out the creative process employed for Physic Injury and see how much of this is still relevant and what is changed as the band enter into this new project. We also talk of general garbage while also touching on other important items like, the Ninch (of course) and the 788, rip Ozzy (of course), public transport and Al's delving into there of, Stiff Richards, Fever Shack, and other Ninch bands, the legendary status of Mindsnare, Herald Sun subscriptions, band meetings for Lotharios up and coming USA tour, POLUTE, the amazing new album from Milly Strange, also Melbourne band Mid Youth Crisis had an album called Happiness and Authority that Al likes, bass bar chords (rip Lem), the guide to being happy nice guys and a low down on the vegan aioli incident.

This explosion on wheels will  at the Tote on September 13th with Pro Team

... and also they'll detonate a charge in Fremantle WA on November 1st

  • EP46 | Grevillea | You wont believe its true - real Rock 'n' Roll results in only 2 weeks ... Read more

Billie Joe on Weekends, we're in the studio in Collingwood this week for all 3 members of Grevillea; Ben, Dom and Harry. They have been very generous with their time given they also had to set up for their afternoon gig prior to meeting me, right after they needed to shoot off and play said gig at the Fitzroy Bowls Club and right after that they needed to get down to Last Chance set up and then play their album release party. The recently released album and this release party are the reason we have the boys on the show and also makes up our main line of questioning. The new album is called Stuck in the Blue and it is an excellent debut effort. I encourage everyone to give it a listen through. As well as the album and the release party we also talk about Mini Skirt, Bad Dreems, Skeggs, Punts, Tim Maxwell, saving up for a run of vinyl, Tom Petty and Sex Pistols, 1am film shoots in laundromats, Flo Rida, Sheryl Crow and most importantly hanging with Billie Joe and Tre Cool.

Grevilleas Album release party was at Last Chance last Saturday, should have been there and was sold out - great effort, excellent show.

Go check out their album - Stuck in the Blue

  • EP45 | Elvis 2 | Music to die on the toilet to ... Read more

Monster on Weekendz, episode 45, we're in the studio on a Sunday with half of the local garage rocking outfit Elvis 2. Mitch and Beth join us for a chat, and a chat we have. The plan was to deep dive on Elvis 2 to find out everything there is to find out about the band, Mitch's vision, the album Thank you very much and the new split 7inch with Autobahns, but they basically tell me nothing and hold me hostage with their gags and hilarity. We also talk about sweet treats cooked in dirty oil, pool noodles, the Australian Pancake Party, Michael Schumacher, being a tik tok band, Jingles, the saga of Autobahns and the Beechworth Hotel, Decibel Limits in Vegas, Punts vs Skeggs, an Introduction to the Queen of England and the Secret Service but mostly more than anything else we talk about Monster Energy and the bands ultimate desire to be sponsored by the king of energy drinks .

Go listen to the latest split 7 with Autobahns, its very good

Also, this Friday August 8th, gig at Creatures of Habit on Brunswick street, supporting Blowers 10inch launch with Chelsea Hotel

Anarchy on Weekends, episode 44,  we're in the studio with one of the most interesting bands in Melbourne, Arborists, we have the whole band Sudi, Tom and Avatar. Interesting because of their musical output, two diametrically opposed forms of sound, thrash punk and folk. Sucking on a round of Pabst Blue Ribbon we dissect the bands sounds and their new album, An Absolute Skewering Of Modern Society. We also delve into the rest, Loving Melbourne, Loving Gummo, Dark Mofo, drum machines, all of their side projects from instrumental folk songs to rap, Dead Kennedys, Red Hell, Violins, spiritual experiences, stand up comedian brothers, Devo-esque band uniforms, guitaristlessness, Cherry bar, we also chat about the Northern Rivers where the guys are all originally from and i wont leave them alone about the folk

  • EP43 | W.O.M.B.A.T | Experts agree, the key to modern happiness - Be 18 and play in a Rock 'n' Roll band with ya mates ... Read more

Yo, total madness, we managed to successfully reassemble all 4 members of W.O.M.B.A.T after a typically chaotic night of mayhem. They played at the Punters the night before with none other than local legends the Dumb Punts, then they entered the night and each experienced their own storyline of debauchery. The day after, they reconvene in the studios with myself and we hit record its more or less a Melbourne rock n roll version of Superbad in real life. Lucky me.

Harry, Zoe, Leion and Lachlan are the superbads and have they've played over 50 gigs this year, or more, the stories are unsubstantiated but glorious. They play a lot. They play multiple times most weeks all over town. They're tight and are now a very well oiled machine. A band started off the back of attending a Split System show for the first time. They are working on recording music and once its available tis gonna be good. besides the disorder we mange to debate the hot topics, is Coffin a punk band? What you'll learn from the school of Dumb Punts, are instrument swaps still cool? How cool is Split System, Loving Royal Headache, is it true what they say about teenagers on drugs? And so on and so forth.

Catch W.O.M.B.A.T at the Gem in the lobby bar August 2nd with The Rartel and Munted Chunts

  • EP42 | The Antics | Australian Pub Rock 101 - This semester we discover Coloured Balls, the Saints and Radio Birdman ... Read more

Episode 42, yeh baby, we're out on location this week, in the beer garden at Thornbury Local with young pub rock rebels the Antics. We get the full band, with front babe punk rock fireball and fearless band leader Freya joined by some new recruits to the camp, Kealy, James and Will. We discuss the joys of discovering a new sound with new band mates, jamming the new tunes and planning up and coming gigs (there are a few). The Antics sound is rooted in original Australian Pub rock. The band prove there mettle and music knowledge with the classics like Coloured Balls, the Saints and Radio Birdman. 4 very talented musicians, fire in the bellies, thunderbolts in their eyes, education done right and ready to rock a dive bar near you. We also chat about other bands like Our Carlson, cutters, Frenzal and Django Reinhart, we discover James' favourite band is Sabbath and NIB is his go to, apparently Freya's rehearsals recently have been so electric that blood has been drawn - inspiring the whole band to play harder, the Tote is still the best to play but Melbourne has so many and its hard to chose, Kealy loves Devo (and so do we), Bandcamp is better than Spotify but maybe LimeWire was best of all time?, also di you know Will is also your Beat magazine gig guide maestro?

New music is being writing, rehearsed and recorded

    Gigs coming up:

This Saturday July 19th at the Evelyn supporting Dr Sures Unusual Practice and Public Figures

Next Thursday July 24th at the Old Bar for Leaps And Bounds Music fest with Lothario and Public Figures (again, I think they're friends or something)

Episode 41, we're in the studio at the Gem with Josh, Sonny and Luke from the Exiles. I've got a Bloody Mary, Luke has a pint of Guinness and everyone else is observing soda water. It doesn't matter we get started and we don't stop, its a longer one, but the chat keeps going so let it ride out. We mostly chat about the new album(new as of last December) the milestone that it was to complete and bring to life. They are now working on new songs, with the whole band contributing as well as their Rick Rubin-esque producer at large Alex Markwell from Delta Riggs. We also chat about, song writing in general, missing band members due to injuries, Old Bar gigs, ACDC and Bon in Ringwood, Cherry Dolls, Bats, Nick Cave, Pulp Fiction, Wire, Television, Viagra Boys, Fontaines, Wunderhorse, The Strokes and the Spotify algorithm.

  • EP40 | Seven Pound Halo | Anthemic and Heavy, top experts unanimous on future of Rock 'n' Roll ... Read more

Episode 40, forty as, the big 4 oh, wanted to do something special for this one, so i dragged my bones outta bed early Saturday morning and caught up with young Melbourne rockers Seven Pound Halo in an abandoned and decaying factory. The boys were out there to record their latest music video for their new song Prescribe Me. After carting half their drum kit through the stickiest mud in Australia i set up a little make shift spot for our interview. Amidst the sounds of planes and trains we cover off the idea of Anthemic Rock, inspirations like Stone Temple Pilots, Dandy Warhol's and Filter, there is a new Sleep Token album out and everyone would benefit from hearing, writing songs around the vocal, Free Pam, shipping containers, gigs in the UK(helped by their guitarist being from the UK), how its hard to get played on Triple J if you don't fit within their parameters, they have a Victorian regional tour in September, which is also when their EP comes out

They bang out catchy anthems like its nothing, they rock and they're fun

Gigs coming up, music coming out

Video for their last video, Trail

Howdy folks, we're back with episode 39, in the studio with Felix and Logan from Maquina Peligrosa this week. The guys have a new 7 inch out, a show this weekend and more coming up in August. They're super cool guys, been around playing in loads of great local bands and now are sinking their time and teeth into this psych surf garage monster, Maquina Peligrosa or Death Machine, they are every part machine and screaming surf guitars standing in the face of death, haha or something like that. We chat about all that noise and the origins of their sound and the band, last minute gigs with Cinco Savage, their sweet blend of grungy garage surf, Dick Dale, their new single Chased by Goons, punchy grooves, Metallica and Def Leppard, Fat Freddys Drop and Shapeshifter, cross pollinated gigs, King Kingo from Brisbane (if you remember them), Exotica, Ministry, NIN, The ReChords 2 year residency at the Gem (remember when the stage was against the Wellington Street wall?), Elvis gets a mention, David Lynch does as well, Rob interrupts us and we take time to address our love for Chicken Wings.
