  • #65 - Navigating Weight Stigma at the Doctor's Office with Ragen Chastain

This week, we’re talking to Ragen Chastain, a speaker, writer, researcher, Board Certified Patient Advocate, multi-certified health and fitness professional, and thought leader in weight science, weight stigma, health, and healthcare. Utilizing her background in research methods and statistics, Ragen has brought her signature mix of humor and hard facts to healthcare, corporate, conference, and college audiences from Kaiser Permanente and the Diabetes Education Specialists National Conference, to Amazon and Google, to Dartmouth, Cal Tech and canfitpro. Author of the Weight and Healthcare newsletter, the book Fat: The Owner's Manual, co-author of HAES Health Sheets, and editor of the anthology The Politics of Size, Ragen is frequently featured as an expert in print, radio, television, and documentary film. In her free time, Ragen is a national dance champion, triathlete, and marathoner who holds the Guinness World Record for Heaviest Woman to Complete a Marathon. Ragen lives in LA with her fiancée Julianne and their adorable dog.

We had an amazing conversation with Ragen about...

    • Why doctors are so deeply entrenched in the weight-centric paradigm
    • How medical weight stigma causes harm
    • The role of privilege & power dynamics in navigating medical situations
    • The unethical marketing of weight loss surgery & weight loss drugs
    • And practical ways to navigate specific medical situations, such as: weigh-ins (no, they're not required by insurance!), blood pressure readings, recommendations for weight loss, recommendations for weight loss drugs or weight loss surgery, and BMI-based denials.

  • #63 - The Importance of Inclusive Activewear for Plus-Size Kids with Pam Luk, Found of Ember & Ace

This week, we’re talking to Pam Luk, founder of Ember & Ace, an athletic wear brand for plus size kids. Growing up playing sports, Pam learned firsthand the importance of finding active wear that fits. Not finding it is one of the main reasons kids quit sports. Pam launched Ember & Ace exclusively for plus size kids with a focus on comfort and performance.

We had an amazing conversation with Pam about...

    • Her own experiences of being an active plus size kid
    • How being a parent has changed her relationship to her body (and bodies in general)
    • Why a lack of inclusive activewear & uniforms can lead many kids to quit the physical activities they love
    • What messages we're sending to kids when they can't find activewear in their sizes
    • Why removing barriers to access is a truly health-promoting goal & how this relates to the new AAP guidelines
    • Why access to movement is important for kids, having nothing to do with changing their body sizes
    • And the groundbreaking work she's doing in expanding activewear sizing for kids in larger bodies!

You can find out all about Ember & Ace, order online, and join the newsletter at Ember & Ace (emberandace.com).

  • #62 - Making Movement Sustainable by Lowering the Bar

It's the first week of February, which means we're right at the time when almost 70% of folks will give up on their new year's resolutions....not because they lack willpower or dedication, but because the goals they set for themselves were simply not sustainable. So if you're one of the many people who might be reassessing the movement routine you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, this episode is for you! This week, we're talking about why lowering the bar to entry & to what counts is the key to creating a sustainable & doable movement routine. And because we know that's often much easier said than done, we're also giving you some specific strategies for how you can put this into practice yourself!

Plus, if you'd like some additional support for creating a sustainable movement routine, Sadie has a new FREE resource that can help you do just that! • #61 - What's Wrong With the American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines for Higher-Weight Children with Anna Lutz

*Content Warning: This week's episode contains use of the O-word, as well as discussion of weight loss surgery.*

Earlier this month, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a new guideline document containing weight loss recommendations for children as young as two years old. So this week, we are talking to Anna Lutz, MPH, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S
about everything that's wrong with these recommendations.

Anna Lutz is a Registered Dietitian in Raleigh, NC.  Anna and Elizabeth Davenport, another anti-diet RD, are the co-creators of Sunny Side Up Nutrition, a blog and podcast that focus on nutrition, cooking and family feeding, free of diet culture. Anna is also the co-owner of a private practice in Raleigh, NC, Lutz, Alexander & Associates Nutrition Therapy. Anna specializes in eating disorders and pediatric/family nutrition and enjoys mentoring and providing clinical supervision to other dietitians.

We had an amazing conversation about...

    • How these recommendations are a full reversal of the AAP guidelines from 2015, and the conflicts of interest that likely influenced this shift
    • The life-long physical, medical, and relational harm of weight loss recommendations for children
    • The increased risk for eating disorders & weight cycling that will likely result from these recommendations
    • Why weight loss recommendations are never a solution to weight stigma
    • How parents can navigate pediatrician appointments in light of these recommendations
    • And what health markers actually are important for kids!

You can find out more about Anna & about diet-free parenting at Sunny Side Up Nutrition or Lutz Alexander Nutrition Therapy | Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill (lutzandalexander.com).

  • #58 - Why We're Just Saying No to Heroin Chic

ICYMI, last month the New York Post published an article claiming that the worst fashion trend of the 1990s & 2000s was making a comeback - heroin chic. If you lived through this the first time, you probably recall how damaging & shaming this trend was, and you might have felt more than a little traumatized by seeing this headline pop up. So this week, we're breaking down all the reasons why we're never going back to heroin chic. We're talking about our own experiences of this trend the first time around; how beauty trends are used as distractions, and who benefits from those distractions; why these trends are political and disproportionately harm folks who are already politically and socially marginalized; and how we, as consumers, can learn to think critically about body types being sold to us as trends.

If you're dreading the diet & body talk at your holiday family gatherings, you're not alone!
