  • #55 - What If I Still Want To Lose Weight?

Despite the fact that Intuitive Eating is absolutely not a weight loss program, most people come into the practice holding out the hopes that they will lose weight. And that's okay! And because of how common this is, we wanted to dedicate an episode to addressing the nuances of why weight loss and Intuitive Eating don't go together, and why it's important to at some point start to unpack and let go of those weight loss hopes. Within this episode we're talking about: why it's so common to hold out hopes of weight loss when starting an Intuitive Eating practice; why unpacking our desires for weight loss is an integral part of Intuitive Eating work & how not addressing it in our work will hold us back; and some practical ways to address our hopes for weight loss.  Plus, don't miss Naomi's hot take on a popular Intuitive Eating saying about weight!

  • #54 Pre and Postnatal Exercise: A Radically Different Approach with Jessie Mundell

This week, we’re talking to Jessie Mundell (she/her). Jessie has over 15 years experience in exercise coaching and personal training for people who are pregnant, newly postpartum, and parents. She is a registered Professional Kinesiologist and holds a Master's Degree in Kinesiology, with studies focused in prenatal and postnatal exercise.

Jessie is the creator of Core + Floor Restore, To Pregnancy and Beyond, the Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness Specialist Academy, and co-host of the To Birth and Beyond podcast where she coaches pregnant and postpartum people, moms, parents, and fitness and health professionals on strength training and fitness during and after pregnancy.

She currently works with hundreds of clients and coaches around the world, guiding them through exercise in their pregnancies, postpartum recoveries, C-section healing, and their return to more intense fitness training.

We had an amazing conversation about...

    • how Jessie's own experience with diet culture has such a profound impact in how she trains clients and other fitness coaches
    • the biggest areas of opportunities for fitness professionals when working with pre and post-natal clients
    • how diet culture, racism, anti-fatness and other systems of oppression impact the pre-natal, birth, and post-partum experience
    • Jessie's Pre-Natal and Post-Natal Fitness Specialist Academy and how it is radically different than all other pre/postnatal fitness courses out there
    • ...and so much more! If you're a fitness professional who works with pregnant or post-natal clients, if you are currently pregnant or a new parent, OR if you have an interest in diving deep into exploring ways to move and live in your body without all of the harmful diet culture narratives, you will not want to miss this episode!

  • #53 - The Power of Inclusive & Accessible Fitness Spaces with Vysh Sivakumaran

This week we’re talking to Vysh Sivakumaran, a certified strength coach, trauma informed yoga instructor, and a fitness industry leader in the Toronto community.

Vysh (vai-sh) works to create inclusive, body neutral, and accessible fitness, through 1:1, group, and corporate services within her online fitness community, Fitness in Place (FIP). With her powerlifting background and quick adaptation at the start of the pandemic, she was awarded Canfitpro's Fitness Professional of the Year Award. She advocates passionately for representation in the industry for South Asian women, but more broadly, aims to be a voice for all people who may face barriers in the wellness.

We had an amazing conversation with Vysh about how she shifted her own understanding of health & diet culture, and how that has shifted the way she works with clients; the importance of safe inclusive fitness spaces, how she cultivates those spaces, and how the fitness world can do better; how having safe, trauma-informed, inclusive spaces helps build body autonomy; how she's working to create a place at the table for herself & her community; and the link between representation and overcoming impostor syndrome.

  • #51 - Is Intuitive Eating For Everyone?

Often when we talk about Intuitive Eating with new people or on social media, we hear variations of "I'd love to eat intuitively, but I can't because..." The end of that sentence is sometimes about weight loss, sometimes about health concerns, or sometimes about something completely different. So this week, we're talking about who gets to practice Intuitive Eating! We're digging into all the nuances of whether or not Intuitive Eating is really for everyone, including: whether you need to lose weight first; whether you can practice Intuitive Eating if you have a medical condition; how Intuitive Eating might work for folks in eating disorder recovery; and whether Intuitive Eating is actually accessible for folks from marginalized communities or who are experiencing financial insecurity or food insecurity.

And we're just a couple of weeks away from the opening of our upcoming online community, The Satisfaction Space! Click here to join the waitlist & be the first to know when the community opens!

  • #50 - You Don't Have to Get Back on Track for Fall!

It's the week after Labor Day, and a new season often means a new version of diet culture popping up. In the fall, it's usually the narrative of "getting back on track" after the summer. So this week, we're breaking down all the reasons why you actually don't have to get back on track at all! We're chatting about: why we might feel drawn to diets again at this time of year; how we can reclaim our routines & structures without framing them around diet culture; why fluctuations in our routines & our bodies are a totally normal part of life; and how we can redefine the idea of the "track" altogether!

Plus, we've got some big news about the future of the podcast - including the opening of the waitlist for our upcoming online community, The Satisfaction Space! Click here to join the waitlist & be the first to know when the community opens!

Lori Civello (she/her) is a New York City Native and Current Georgia transplant, is a certified language interpreter, Integrated Model of Interpreting practitioner, and college instructor. Lori grew up with Deaf parents and started her interpreting career in high school interpreting community theater shows for the Girl Scouts. Chelsey Cahilly (she/her) is a nationally certified ASL/English interpreter, mentor, college instructor, and practitioner of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI). Together, Lori and Chelsey host TheSignSpace.net, an online community where interpreters and students can collaborate and grow through mentoring, workshops, and deliberate practice sessions.

If you've been following us on Instagram, you may have seen that Chelsey & Lori have been interpreting the podcast into ASL and posting it, along with their insightful after-cast discussions, on their website! In this episode, we had the opportunity to talk to them directly about their own experiences with diet culture; how experiences with diet culture may differ within Deaf culture; how diet culture & other systems of oppression show up in the ways that we communicate & the ways that we access communication; and how diet culture & other systems of oppression can be obstacles for interpreters in the ways that they can represent & show for their Deaf clients.
