The death of rapper, family man, entrepreneur and community leader Nipsy Hussle has been met with an incredible show of love and respect across the globe. His message of ownership and family, along with his music has spread greatly since he passed. Why do we wait until people are gone to show our love & support? With so many theories on why he was killed will this stop the movement he was creating? Do we use conspiracies to hide the fact that we don't want to take responsibility for the things we do as a community? Director Jordan Peele's new movie "US" has been met with mixed interpretations, criticisms and views but its theme of having two completely opposite ways of seeing the same world can be universally understood. Something as simple as identifying by gender before race or sexual orientation before faith can lead to us having night and day experiences of the same event. When faith, sexual orientation, political views, etc are put before race and culture how do we get on the same page? And is that OK within the community? After the death of Stephon Clark by law enforcement in Sacramento, California the community waited for nearly a year to hear if charges were going to be brought up against the officers involved. Instead D.A. Anne Schubert held an hour long press conference addressing Stephon Clark, his relationship, family & mental state. No charges were brought against the officers and it seems as if Mr Clark was the only subject of her investigation. Since then the community has shown its frustration through protests, marches, shut downs and public forums. When the people feel the system has failed them...there is no choice but to Say Something!!!

With so many celebrities in the news for all of the wrong reasons, is there a line we draw as a community? Is there a point where we can no longer overlook what they've done wrong because of the love we have for their talent? Can we separate the person from the artist and still listen to their music, see their movies or watch their games even though our support may be financing their bad habits?

It seems like every other day there is a new incident that enrages us that seems to go away just as quickly. Whether it be treatment in a particular store or establishment or belittlement by way of "jokes" or mockery, we get upset, scream "boycott this" and there seems to be no follow through. Separating the individual from their talent is a problem this world faces everyday. Loving someone for an amazing ability or skill then finding out their character doesn't align with their level of talent is hard for many. In America nearly 1 out of 4 women have been sexually abused by the age of 18. A number most believe to be higher because many women don't come forward and name their accuser. What do we do when someone who through their talents has brought us joy and amazing experiences, then we find out has brought so much pain to others? Are we willing to let go of those favorite movies, songs, shows and moments? When the truth is brought to light it's easy to say "go after all of those involved", but are we really ready to do that as a society because so many in their personal lives have also been guilty of looking the other way? In our society we're told to do "whatever it takes" to support our families, handle our responsibilities and to make something of ourselves. But how far is too far? Is it "selling out" to conform in order to keep the lights on? When is it a case of pride vs ego? What responsibilities do we have to a culture that may not be able to provide the same opportunities? Music has always been used to influence sales, mood and of course culture. It's why we have "fight songs", anthems, even that first song played at our wedding. But what about the negative influence it can have on our young people? When artists not only fail to take responsibility, but build and base their careers off of negative and in some cases criminal behavior? The phrase, "If you don't vote, you don't have a right to complain" gets used often but is that our only voice? And if so, is it enough? With groups with low voter turnout yet economic growth & community empowerment what other methods should we look in to? When incidents like Jemel Roberson, Tamir Rice & others happen what do we say to those who have lost faith in the system?
