Episode 73 this week features SERGE GAINSBOURG as our FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK! Serge Gainsbourg, born Lucien Ginsburg, was the son on Jewish Ukrainian immigrants who fled to France during Nazi occupation during WW2. He learned the piano growing up, which set him off on a career steeped in music. He had tenacity, he had determination, he had passion, and he had the "it" factor. Probably one of the coolest guys ever, the man was never seen without a cigarette in his mouth. He was a writer, poet, singer, actor, director, producer... a true jack of all trades, master of all. This episode is coupled with some of the BEST EURO POP/YÉ-YÉ/BEAT/GARAGE Europe had to offer! Enjoy!

On episode 72 of the show Geoff and I are traveling to the Middle of the East to jam out to our FEATURED ARTIST - KOUROSH YAGHMAEI!! Kourosh grew up in Tehran, learning to play the Rock songs of the Ventures, Monkees, Rolling Stones and the Beatles, and performing at his school, at social events and even on Iranian television! It wasn't until he started writing his own songs that people really started paying close attention. His passion for music was real, and his ability to weave Iranian folk music with western Rock N Roll was seamless. So sit back, relax, and listen to some great world music this week, with a nice heaping dollop of Kourosh Yaghmaei!

On episode 71 of our show this week Geoff and I dive into Cambodia to check out our featured artist this week... PAN RON! Putting out hundreds of songs in such a short amount of time, Pan Ron was prolific and powerful, solidifying herself as one of the leading singers in the East. Not only did she write and sing the majority of her songs, she was extremely experimental with her styling jumping from Traditional to Pop to Go-Go to Jazz to Twist... all in the same album! Check it out!

This is Episode 70 of Scarlo's International House of Music, and Geoff and I are tipping the hat to Jackie Mittoo this week! Jackie Mittoo was one of the musical directors for Studio One records - one of the most important Reggae music labels in Jamaica! And don't let me forget to tell you he's also one of the funkiest keyboardists you'll ever hear! Akin to Jimmy Smith, Jackie Mittoo straddles the lines between Reggae and Jazz, weaving elements of Blues and Soul into his music as well. It's no wonder why he's our Artist of the Week!

On this week's show Geoff and I dive DEEP into ELECTRONIC AFRICAN MUSIC! Here we explore songs that dip the toes and DIVE right into all facets of Electronic. Some of it is dance-y, some of it is poetic, some of it is straight FUNKY while some other songs merely flirt with synths and drum machines. Easily one of my favorite episodes so far, not only will you learn about something COMPLETELY different, you'll have a great time doing so! Hear selections from William Onyeabor, Francis Bebey, Hailu Mergia, Apagya Dance Band, Angela Starr and SO MUCH MORE!

This week on our show ADNAN OTHMAN gets the Featured Artist Special Treatment (tradmark pending*)! Adnan Othman connected with his audience by playing in Major chords, which was how a lot of popular Western music was played at the time, but was able to also fulfill the desire of those who wanted to hear music sung in their own language! Wildly popular in Malaysia and Indonesia during the 60's and 70's, Adnan Othman continues to play music today for special events... but dedicates most of his time to his other passion... painting! Check out three INCREDIBLE songs from three different eras on our show this week! And of course, like always, we've got GREAT MUSIC from ALL OVER THE PLACE TOO!!!

On our show this week Geoff and I explore Super-Political Psych-Folk warrior SELDA! An extremely outspoken liberal activist in Turkey, Selda was the student of engineering physics until she decided to pursue musical service to the Turkish people. With her powerful and passionate voice, she highly criticized the government and even after the coup d'etat in 1980 was arrested four times in three years for her activism! Selda still performs, creates and produces records to this day, working in Istanbul at her studio called Majör Müzik Yapım.
This week Geoff and I put on our Mambo Shoes (is that a thing?) and feature BENY MORÉ!!! Beny Boy was a cuban-born singer/guitarist who moved to Mexico City where he found fame and fortune, but not without a long hard road of street hustling and performing in small, tiny clubs. He touched the lives of many with his beautiful voice, uplifting persona, and infectious rhythms. Beny passed away, unfortunately, due to his love of the drink at the early age of 43. His legacy lives on, however, and this week we pay homage to the arguable King of Mambo!
This week on Episode 64... our featured artist is none other than FRANCOISE HARDY! The French yé-yé princess who inspired the likes of Bob Dylan, Serge Gainsbourg, and Mick Jagger! But it didn't stop there... Peter Sellers and Jean-Luc Godard also featured her in their films... but then there was television! And fashion! This woman has done it all, and still does! An icon in French culture, and a global hit, this woman has it all!
