We’ve got a fierce episode coming at you this week! Our guest on the pod is Carolyn Colleen, the founder of the FIERCE network, a collective of resilience-building and empowerment services that help women on their life journeys. Carolyn shares her own scars and lemonade journey beginning with her challenging childhood (challenging is an understatement) in which she experienced abuse and neglect, and how it shaped her relationship with love and self-love. She shares how making changes and surviving then thriving for 5 minutes at a time and borrowing love helped her to break the cycle of abuse with her own children and go on to want to help other women by creating the FIERCE Network. She talks to Pat and Abi about the importance of making self-care a daily part of her routine, letting go of the need to do everything herself, and asking for help. They round out the episode with a 2-for-1 games sesh, playing A Slice of Hollywood and Lemonade Stand.

Happy Valentine’s Day…or whatever! In this Valentine’s episode, Pat and Abi profess their undying love for romantic comedies. In theory, this genre is the bond that ties this episode together, but like any good entry in the rom-com canon, it is full of obstacles trying to throw our central duo off course. We talk about shame around mental health, the importance of expressing a spectrum of emotions and gifting yourself with the permission to feel whatever it is that you feel. We also discuss parenting kids using what we liked about how we were raised and what we want to do differently. Fatima shares how she reconciles her past with her present and who she wants to be in her future. She also shares the process that she uses in her own life to recognize, examine, and release hurt. This week on Scars and Lemonade, Patrick and Abi sit down with Myrna Scales, a source of mental health and wellness support for mothers with chronically ill children and/or children with special needs. Myrna is a mother of two children, one of whom was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumor as a baby. Myrna shares her parenting journey from receiving her child’s diagnosis throughout his treatment and into the present moment. She is generous with her candor and reminds us that even when you don’t think you have it in you to make it through an incredibly difficult situation, you are more capable and resilient than you know. She provides mental health management tips for people parenting children with a chronic illness that frankly are helpful for everyone, including encouraging us to learn about our own personalities so that we can learn what coping strategies work for each of us. We talk about boundaries, staying present, and how to share difficult news with loved ones. And of course, we wrap our conversation with a game (name, tbd).
